Our 2 new rescue boys ♥️

Hi guys, I’m still new to this lovely group :) I had 5 beautiful budgies already but last week rescued these two lovely show/exhibition budgies ‘of no use to show or breed’ 😢 we may potentially be rescuing a few more that have French moult and are due to be ‘destroyed’ because the breeder can’t use them. Just trying to find another large cage for them and waiting to hear back from the breeder.
the two boys we have just took on are currently in a quarantine cage and still pretty scared. I’m hoping to get them up to full health, vitamins, plenty of fruit and veg. Do you think it’s best to let them settle in their cage before I let them out in the room to fly? As they’ve been stuck in a tiny cage their whole lives I can’t imagine they’ve had much time to spread their wings. They’re around a year old :)

What handsome guys, I would wait on letting them out of the cage, they need to settle in and be more comfortable in their new home first. Thanks for rescuing them, how awful that the breeder has French Molt in others and wants to destroy them, here is some info on French Molt French Molt: Diagnosis, Prevention and Control
I would have these 2 seen by an avian vet before introducing them to your other birds, they may not have been kept in the best of surroundings at the breeders and who knows what they may have picked up, hopefully they are both in good health.

Thank you for replying, yes we are waiting to maybe pick up the others next week then will take them all to the vet in one go.
I have a feeling it will be a slow/patient road in getting them to eat a good diet, play and trust us but it will be worth it knowing they now have a loving home ♥

How old are the birds with French Molt? I would talk to a vet before you take them to find out about the possibility of passing the virus, I think there is a vaccine for polyomavirus which is what has been implicated as a cause for French Molt.

They are stunning! I agree with Cody's advice above.

It's awful to remember once in a while that there are people who selfishly ascribe value to living beings based on their utility or relevance :(

Anyways, that aside, I'm SO glad that you've rescued these handsome boys and I know they're going to have a wonderful life with you!

Also, their feathers will probably become even more brilliant and gorgeous after they settle in and after a few months of a better diet and stress free lifestyle :D

It's so fortunate for these little ones that there are people like you in this world who not only have the space and financial resources to take care of a whole flock of budgies but have a generous and loving heart to bring them in as well ❤

I hope to see more of them soon! Do they have names yet?

thank you guys, we weren’t planning on expanding our flock this much but I just couldn’t get these birds out my head. How their little lives can just be destroyed 😢 I’ve researched for hours and from what I’ve read they can still live happy/healthy although shorter lives.
I don’t knowhow old yet or how many, the breeder wants to go through them and pick out the ones of no use 😢 hopefully will hear from him next week he said.
I work as a dog groomer from home so am surrounded by animal people 🤣 I’ve spoken to a couple of vet clients, one wasn’t sure the other said that aslong as they aren’t near any nesting birds or young chicks then they can’t pass it on. I have no plans to breed or have chicks, apparently the parent or any bird around a nest Of chicks can pass it to them?

They don’t look to impressed after their warm water misting 🤣 also my toddler is obsessed with Sesame Street so we are thinking Bert and Ernie.

These are very handsome gentlemen! Good on you for giving them a home!

I adopted a budgie from a shelter two weeks ago where he was in a small cage on the floor and had probably never been out in his life (he and a bunch of other budgies had been dropped off by a breeder who'd shut down his business). I kept the boy in his new cage for two weeks before letting him out so that he would feel comfortable in the cage and associate it with food and safety. I also wanted him to get visually familiar with the room he is in. I let him out for the first time yesterday. It was an awkward and panicked experience for him and he ended up landing on top of a painting after flapping around wildly (and hitting the ceiling a few times). When I brought the cage up to the painting, he hopped right back in knowing it was a safe space.

Once you feel that your budgies are comfortable in ther new cage and have been in the new room long enough to observe it, you can start letting them out as they will eventually return to their cage on their own - even if you have to bring it up to them. I am trying to get my boy to go out again today but he's a bit frightened. I have left some millet just outside the cage to lure him. :)

The poor sweeties 😭. The life they must have lived must be heartbreaking. I'll never understand how people can treat a living being so terribly!

Thank you so much for taking them in and giving themba life were they are well cared for and loved!
