Outsmarting the bird, part 4 - victory!?

Hi:

In this series finale, we have video proof: Chiribiri eating Harrison's lifetime mash + crushed super fine! He's been at it this way since about mid february, following 14 months of effort, trying nearly every possibly diet conversion tactic and pellet out there. He picks at this from morning until 2:30-3pm. To get him to this state, in January I introduced the pellets in the white mason jar cap (shallow) so he could "forage" through it and be less scared of dunking his head down. We left this immediately adjacent to his favorite perch - anywhere else, he would completely ignore it. I still hand-feed him crushed super-fine pellets as seen in episode 3, it is fun for both of us.

Later in the day, I give him roughly a teaspoon of seeds at the farthest part of the cage, which he devours like there's no tomorrow (leaving a little left over). He's holding his weight, which is excellent. Please note, Chiribiri is "small frame" and eats a bit less than most budgies.. without other foods, he consumes only 1.5-2 tsps daily and maintains a dainty weight around 27-28g. Ultimately, I'm hoping he'll have a few more veggies and pellets, and we drop the seed amount just a bit more. His last bloodwork did show elevated fats, but that could also be from his lack of exercise and me pushing on the millet trying to lure him out.

This brings up a question: what should I do if I have to leave for the entire day? Options are leave only the pellets and veggies clipped, or provide everything including seeds. I ask this because if there are seeds in the cage, he will not eat the pellets at all. I haven't tried to see what he does if the seeds run out.. I've seen where some of you offer seeds first thing in the morning, and while I'm tempted to try it eventually, this current routine is working so I don't see a reason to change it right now.

Re: if you have to be out for the entire day: If you can try this while you are around and see what happens, I would try putting some portion of his daily seed out with veggies and pellets in the morning. Then see how long it takes after he gobbles up the seeds before he gets hungry enough to go for the veggies or pellets. I've been testing this out myself and have found that if Sweety feels he got a "decent amount" of seeds early in the morning (seems to him this would be about 1/3 of his daily seeds), then a few hours later he is getting into the pellets. And he will be fine with pellets for quite a long time after that, but will eventually of course will become ravenous for more seeds so I let him have some more for dinner.

If I only put a little bit or no seed, just pellets and veggies, then he is just mad about it. He may eventually head into the pellets but he is literally cussing me out while he does it and only picks at them. Then he acts frantic as long as it takes until he gets seeds, crawling the bottom of the cage seeing if he can reach one that fell down through the gate, squawking loudly, and generally behaving as if he is starving to death.

I'm also finding that if he begins to know that he will have a certain amount in the morning, such as about 1/3 of his daily total, he will actually ration himself on the seeds (because he knows no more are coming until later in the day). Of course he will always ultimately eat every single one of them. But if he has a small belly full for a short time, it seems to keep him satisfied longer and he is more willing to eat pellets.

When I know I'll be out of the house for the entirety of the day, I'll opt for the seeds in the morning tactic. Right now, I do exactly what you do: pellets from morning onwards, and I'll give them each a tsp of seed around 8pm (they sleep at 9:30pm), but only after I've hand fed them pellets until full. Surprisingly enough though, even once I've given them their fill of pellets, they always have room for a lot of seed after lol, it's like us and our dessert stomachs. They don't typically finish off the tsp of seed, there'll be a good 1/4 or just shy of 1/2 left in the bowl, depending on the day.

I've watched the girls myself to see how they react to seeds in the morning instead of before bed. My two will devour the seed in the morning, munch on pellets throughout the day, and then hold out for their expected seed in the evening until the final moment when they realise "Okay, the blinds have come down, the lights are dimming, it's go time, bedtime T-Minus 10 minutes" and they'll do their typical routine of rushing to the pellet bowl and eating a bunch. Once done, they do the whole preening / snoozing routine and then finally scurry up to their sleep perches.

So that could work for Chiri? The good part is I know my girls are getting a good amount of pellets even with the seed in the morning / evening / whatever. They'll have slightly red poops throughout the day due to the ZuPreem dye. It's a great little indicator to see that, yes, they're still eating pellets even if I don't catch them in the act.

PS: I love Chiri's little feather cap, extremely fashionable.

Interesting, okay, thanks to you both. It sounds like best course is to try a few things while I'm home and monitor what he does.

It's funny how there's always room for seeds 😁

I gave him 1 tsp seeds this morning along with the regular pellet mix. First thing, likely from habit, he jumped to the pellet mix. In about an hour he realized seeds were there and he was the happiest I've seen in a while hahaha. He spent most of the morning munching the seeds, then around lunch he began eating from the pellet dish, and jumped between the two rest of the afternoon. He's not begging for food, and this is, of course, the first day, so I'll monitor him and his weight as it'll be a couple weeks before I have to leave him for a day. Good start so far :)
