I thought someone here recently said that a pied bird (no matter which type) has clear center tail feathers. Is this ALWAYS the case? I have a baby from a light green dominant pied male and a DF YF1 sky blue hen that has blue center tail feathers. The other 3 dominant pieds in this clutch have clear center feathers and so do all the recessive pied I have in my other pair's clutch. Here's the pic. He's around 4 weeks old.

Nope the white top tail feather is hardly ever there I think i only have maybe 3 pics in 4 years that it was there, its usually Navy blue on top

This is his Tail normally

Then once in a blue moon its there

if its from Molting then he molts that feather out a lot more than a bird should molt :giggle:

What do you mean "is hardly every there"? Is it just lying under the navy blue one? I'm confused. :S

First pic you see the top of his tail is Navy blue, 2nd pic the top of his tail is white

99% of the time his tail is navy blue just like the 1st picture Then in the 2nd picture I may see that White top tail feather once or twice every year- year and half and its gone just as quickly as it showed up. As you see the dates on the pic it was there on the 21st but gone 8 days later.

"if its from Molting then he molts that feather out a lot more than a bird should molt "

But where does it go if you say it's not from molting?

With as many as I have all the same color I wouldn't know which was his and which was some one elses. almost all my birds are pied.

But if its from molting then he molts his tail feather out more than any bird should. Because he only has that white Tail feather Maybe once a year All the rest of the time its Pure Navy blue on the top.

I don't even know what you're talking about here, but it's okay; you don't need to explain.

The feather doesn't just change from blue to white and then back again, so the only logical explanation is he's molting it, and it comes back in a different color, or one of the center tail feathers is white, one is blue, and sometimes the white one lies on top of the blue one. Right?

He looses the top feather which is white - it does NOT grow back all the time like MOST birds tail feathers when they molt. His tail is Navy blue the majority of the time His white top tail feather only makes an appearance once in a blue moon and doesn't stick around for very long before he "looses" it again and then its back to being a navy blue tail.. No feathers are being flipped over to make it look like that, He just normally has a navy blue tail.

More or less to answer the Original Question no not all pieds have clear (white or yellow depending on the base color) tail feathers.
