Hello again :) I'm starting a new journal for our newest budgie, Piper.

Background, 7/31
In my intro post I mentioned we were going to a different petstore than the one I work to "just look" and see what sort of budgies they had. Three green, two blue, three girls, two boys. Bryan and I both agreed we weren't ready for a green one, so it was a choice between the two blues. One's tail feathers were a bit ruffled, and we suspected a girl. The other was on the floor of the cage most of the time, but he socialized well with the other birds and climbed ladders, had pristine tail feathers, and we could tell for sure it was boy. We were concerned with why he wasn't climbing, but with this store there is a 30 day time frame where any illnesses can be reported and handled by their own vet at the store's cost. So we chose him.

We soon found why he was always at the bottom, the poor bird couldn't fly well due to his primaries being cut way too short! When we first set up the cage, it was clear he couldn't get more than a few inches off the ground, and even fell off a ladder. I layered some shirts at the bottom of the cage to break his fall, and it's helped a lot.

So far he has climbed his way to the top perch which is a good sign, and just today I saw him flutter from one perch to the next without falling. I haven't seen him eat or drink yet, but I've also been working a lot.

While I was at work, Bryan mentioned he was singing and bobbing his head to music. Of course a Piper would love music

Piper is much much less afraid of hands than Dewey was, right from the start. He was originally okay with hands in the cage, but moved away as they got closer. Today, I put some food and a bit of millet in my hand and gradually got closer until my hand was right in front of him. It took a long time, but he eventually took a bite! My hand would occasionally touch him, and he was totally chill.

(you can see here he has absolutely no primaries, poor thing)

He didn't eat anymore and my arm was dying, so I took it out and put in my other with no hand. Once I got close, I extended a finger towards his beak and he nibbled it! I put the finger down towards his belly, and he put one foot on it. I raised my finger a little, and he fully stepped up! I can't believe this has happened, on only the second day! :D :budge:
