Hello,

Freddie is 5 months now and since I've bought him he has been really attached to his little plastic toy bird on a spring.

I've tried removing it and he sulks and refuses to move.

He sits on top of the plastic toy and balances on it playing and I have also caught him trying to mate with it at some points.

Is this a hormone thing?
I worry Freddie may be lonely living on his own.

He gets lots of attention, basically all day.

It has now come inbetween taming though, which is the problem.

He has actually just bitten me and is being protective over the plastic budgie.

I've looked on the forums but can't find this problem, any ideas?

Thanks

Hi there :)

It's usually best to not put any "other budgies" in the cage when none of them are real, meaning plastic budgies and mirrors which make the bird think there's another bird there.

Budgies are social creatures so it doesn't mean they're lonely when they become obsessed with a bird toy or mirror, they're just responding to the "bird" that they seem to see. The problems arise when they become aggressive, protective, and depressed, because their actions go unreciprocated.

You should take out his toy right away, and yes, he will sulk for a few days, but after a while he'll start to show more interest in you and his environment again

Best of luck!

I had a feeling this was best but I just wanted some confirmation.

I will take the plastic budgie out.

Thank you! :)
