Possibly a female?

624 Views 13 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  FaeryBee
Hi everyone, I was hoping someone with a bit more knowledge would be able to pinpoint the gender of my new little one - this is Merry. The first photo was taken while she was in her quarantine cage, and the second was after introducing her to the main cage with Pippin. This is the best photo I can get of her cere as she's still afraid of the camera. She's 13-14 weeks old, and is a Rainbow colouring (first time I've ever had a Rainbow)

Edited post to add and to assuage any fears from more experienced folks - I have had male and female budgies before, so I am aware of the importance of doing everything I can to discourage breeding. Currently Pippin shows no interest in Merry at all, probably because she's so young. I've kept the quarantine cage, so should the need arise to separate them, I can.

She's very pretty but where did you get the info that she is 13-14 weeks old, she appears to be older than that.

Thanks, Cody. From the breeder, but she did say that was an estimate... How old (roughly) would you say she is?
Once a bird is mature it is not possible to determine the age and she is a mature female, she has lost the baby bars on her head which happens with the first molt around 4 months and also you can see the iris in the eyes which develops around 9-10 months of age. I find it a bit disturbing that the breeder does not know the exact age of the birds they are selling. If this bird was hatched at the breeder you got her from what kind of records if any are they keeping?
Hmm. Thanks for that info, Cody. That's concerned me as well. One thing's for sure, I won't be going back there again. A shame, since the conditions they were kept in were very good, but if they can't get the age right for the budgies they're selling, what else aren't they telling me? The fact I have no idea how old she is now is very concerning to me. She could be 3,4,5 - I would have had no idea. I lost my last budgie very recently at 5 years old - I want as many years as possible with my feathery friends, and if they're mis-selling their ages, that's not on.

Edit: One thing I've learnt from this, and I've only just found out that this exists, is to go with a Budgerigar Society registered breeder. I didn't even know that society existed in the uk before today.

A reputable responsible breeder should be able to tell you all specifics about the birds they are breeding.
Exactly, thank you Cody. I've messaged the breeder after talking to you, and asked her to comment, and also to send me all the information she has on Merry. Lesson learned, though!

So, I've spoken to the breeder. They apologised profusely and told me they mis-spoke - she's 13 MONTHS, not 13 weeks. Born at the start of 22.
Another welcome to the forums :) She is definitely a beautiful girl.

She is not, however, rainbow. The "textbook" definition of a Rainbow budgie is blue, yellowface or goldenface, full body greywing or clearwing, and opaline. Addition of any other mutation makes it not technically rainbow. In this case, your little girl is sky blue single factor violet yellowface I spangle opaline :) Truly gorgeous.

Pippin is also quite handsome!

I hope to see more of them around here :D
Thank you so much, StarlingWings! I KNEW I'd learn more on this forum! Thank you!!

As others have determined, she is female. You will notice as she gets tamer that she will be quite high strung as compared to male budgies, at least that's what I have found. And oh yes, she will bite HARD when she gets mad! (Don't worry, budgies can't break the skin.) Try and ignore her if she bites. One of the videos I'm going to post is Jeffery and I 'rough housing', and you'll see his (her) personality clearly! However if you could bond with her as a single budgie she will keep her temper in check as does my Jeffery......

I disagree about breaking the skin 😬 , I have had it happen more than once having to medicate one of my hens.

Merry and Pippin are both lovely budgies.

I would, however, recommend you trim the string fringe on that toy back to no more than 1/2". :)

Thank you so much, FaeryBee! Sorry I hadn't responded earlier, I've been ill with Covid, but I took your advice - I've trimmed back the fringe on that knot as much as I can. They also had a swing in that cage which came with a knotted rope tied around the base - I've left them the swing, but cut off the rope.

I do hope you're feeling better. Take good care of yourself!
When you are feeling better, perhaps you'd like to start an ongoing picture thread for little Merry and Pippin.
