I'll be taking my girl for her well birdy check up tomorrow. What I was wondering, is if the vet has to do something your bird really dislikes, do you stay in the room? I've always stayed in the room. The visits have always been routine and she's great with people. I've thought about how, if (in her opinion) she has to be "manhandled," like for a nail trim etc, that my being there might make her think I'm part of the evil scheme. She tends to hold grudges and scold me if I move her away from an area she shouldn't be, or when I get to close to her food dishes. I don't give in to her demands when it's something that has to be done. With her dominant personality, if I gave her an inch, she'd take a mile, and there are and will be things that have to be done whether she approves or not! My inclination would be to stay in the room with her because I'm a somewhat over protective mama. I was just curious as to what others do. Thanks in advance for appeasing my curiosity 😊.

Most of the time I am in the room, however there have been times when I think the vet prefers to leave the room with the bird depending on what is being done and the equipment needed to do whatever procedure is required. For instance, I have had birds that needed fluid drained from the abdominal area, in that instance the vet left the room with the bird, I think sometimes there are things that the vet thinks are too disturbing for an owner to watch, and does not want to freak out the owner. My vet has a station in the back that is specifically used for nail and beak trims and has various tools available, but there have been times when I have requested that it be done in the room because of the nervousness of the bird and it has not been an issue. I always feel more comfortable if I am right there during any procedure.

I know there are people who are squeamish about medical procedures. I'm not one of them. I've actually watched videos of human botfly removal while eating my dinner lol. After working 15 years as an LNA, along with having done some gnarly procedures on my daughter, there isn't much that grosses me out. I'd more than likely stay in the room and if LoVey wants to cast me as the villan in the scenario, I'll live with it, and she'll get over it...eventually.

I would love to sit in the room with my guy during a dr visit but they ALWAYS take him to an inner room- even for a weigh in. He’s been to two different places and both were like that. Hope your girls appointment goes well💘

Even at the appex of the pandemic, when all the veterinary offices said they would come get your pet, I called and told them I'd ve coming in with my bird! They never argued. Maybe I sounded like a big tough woman, or I'm good at sweet talking 😇. I could see myself following them to the inner room, and getting turned back around.

The appointment went well... when I finally got there. I didn't realize I had the volume down on my phone's gps and had to keep looking at it. Twice I overshot and somehow got myself on the highway. I was running late and I actually turned around in an authorized vehicle only turn. I ended up doing it twice! They were awesome when I finally arrived 45 mins late!
She palpation her crop and abdomen, listened to her heart, weighed her and removed a little bit of hyperkeratosis from her cere. She said daily bathing would help with that. I always say bath time a a fun weekly activity rather than therapeutic. She was not at all pleased with the vet monkeying with her cere. She screeched as if the Dr was biting her leg off. She weighs 39 grams which she said was a good weight. I noted it in my phone and apologized for pulling my phone out. She said they like seeing that. She said with a smile that her breast muscles are big, which tells them the bird gets alot of free flight time. She was impressed with her maneuvering skills in flight. Maverick and Goose (Top Gun) have nothing on LoVey 😂! All in all, the vet said she looks great!

That’s fantastic! I have a lovebird that cries like she’s being murdered every time she is seen by our vet. My other bird is a stoic and goes very still and patiently allows nail and beak trims, crop manipulation, even blood work without a peep.

Stoic she was not lol. If I left the room when the doctor was working on her cere and heard that dramatic screeching it would have scared the daylights out of me. I don't feel like the vet was causing her any pain or discomfort, but she has such a dominant personality that having the vet "overpower" her was, to her, a grave indignity. The vet held her gently, yet firmly. They really know their stuff there. The vet who owns the practice has quadrupal certification in avian medicine. I can picture LoVey becoming a major drama queen the second we entered the building for her next check up lol!
