Well all I have decided to finally retire from my employment, as of the end of this year I will no longer be working officially that is.
I have been working at the same school for 29 years, I loved my job I worked with special needs students.
I was starting to struggle with work and home and my health has been holding me back, I could no longer go on camps, excursions or even walking around the school gave me severe pain in my knees and feet.
I have mixed feelings but know I have made the right choice. I had a lovely lunch yesterday with some of the girls who I am especially close to, and when we leave on the 18th for the end of year break that is it.
I do have many happy memories and some hilarious stories to keep me enthralled. If only I could share some of them maybe in time .
So with more time to myself I intend to be here more often and get out in the garden and cook some lovely meals and see my two grand son's more often Gee I think I am going to be busier at home .:budgie:

That's great! Of course it's a reason to celebrate!! :) My father retired from his job 2 weeks ago and he had a big party with his colleagues!
Congratulations and now you can rest, spend time with your family and flock, do a lot of things that required time! :)

Hi Cathy.. I recently retired a couple of years prior to 'the plan' due to health issues and feeling like I wasn't able to really do the job as I liked to see it be done. It's been a huge transition, as I felt I went from being really busy all the time, to having much more time and, unfortunately, less money too.
But.. that was July, and I'm happily bumping along now. Just give yourself space to grieve the loss and celebrate the new!! This was my second big transition. I worked at a hospital for over 25 years. They were 'bought out' and the new company parted ways with many of us long term staff. That was a huge loss for me.. as I can imagine yours is. Retiring has many many positives... it just took me a while to discover them..
Your trip will be an amazing start for you!!

My mother was a Liberian at a local school I went to the same school she worked at. She worked for 28 years and she said that it is time to retire and she hasn't even missed the work. Mum is keeping herself busy with new hobbies to do...She loved the children that came into the library..My father was a retired Sugar Cane and Potato grower. They loved what they did. Even though you are going to retire you still can go there for a visit and see your work friends and the children. I hope you have a happy retired life full of new and exciting things to do.

Congrats! Enjoy your new freedom. Make a bucket list of all the things you wanted to do or places you wanted to go but never had time for. Check one off as you do it.

I had to retire early at age 59 due to health issues. Not something I was planning on but that is life. I enjoy being home though as I can do whatever I want, whenever I want. Spend most of my time in my "Creating" room....making some or creating a huge mess. lol.

I think you'll find you absolutely LOVE being retired -- I know I do!!
I can fill each and everyday doing things I want to do instead of things I feel I "have to get done" because it's the only time I can fit it in. I don't have to rush from one task (or errand) to the next and I can savor ever little bit of my life.

I found this forum after I quit working and it became my new "passion". I have time to spend with my dogs, my birds, gardening, enjoying nature and my physical pain has lessened considerably as I'm able to pace myself and not overextend my activity.

You can stay in touch with the girls you are closest to by meeting for lunches or inviting them over for tea and conversation. :hug:

I want to shout out a GREAT BIG CONGRATS!!! I retired a year and a half ago after 20 years in a high pressure job and have NEVER looked back. Yes, the income was cut in half, but I found out the cost of living was as well. (I moved from Chicago, IL to Wichita, KS) I LOVE RETIREMENT!!!! To paraphrase Deb: I love finally 'owning' my own life.
You might feel a bit guilty about adopting a leisure pace in the beginning; I had the ol' 'gotta get it done yesterday' work mentality for about the first year -- totally landscaped a yard, laid paver garden paths, mowed not only my own yard but the neighbors on both sides, etc. etc. But I finally got into the 'groove' and am seriously having 'the time of my life' doing just what I want - gardening, playing with my dogs, birds and turtles, aquarium and pond, enjoying visits from family and friends. I'm finally allowing myself to watch TV (Netflix) without guilt after all these years, or get absorbed in a good book without nagging myself about something that might need to be done!!!! You no longer have to get everything done on the weekends and can do your grocery shopping during the best part of the day rather than 9:00 at night.
We're here to support you Cathy as you start to celebrate the 'best years to come'. So WaHooo to You!!!!!:2thumbs:

Congratulations Cathy!! I can only wish the same, lol, but I have ways to go. At least twenty more :scare:
What I love about those days when I didn't work (for the reasons of being unable to find work or when I was a stay-at-home mom), it was the fact that I could just "stop and smell the roses".
Now, I feel like I don't have much time for the things that relax me, and that is sad.
So, enjoy!!

Have a nice retirement :). Linda will probably retire in a year and I still have 10 to go :(.
Get a retirement pair of budgies to keep the flock even and have fun doing whatever you like.
