Hi, I'm new here, but I've had Rio since October.

I have constantly been paranoid that he will become unhappy, but I think generally he's great little fellow. He likes Apple and Curly Kale, eats out of my hand, gets on my hand (sometimes with some biting but he doesn't hurt and I don't react to it)

I have a couple of questions:

1) I did buy a bath (because you can't help wanting to buy loads of things for a your new pet) but he's never used it. How often should a budgie bath? What sort of temperature should the water be? And how do you encourage him in? I have left it on the side of his cage empty... but still no interest really.

2) and this is my most important question, because this is worrying me the most, he doesn't seem to be flying. He's come out of his cage and flown around the kitchen a bit, then found comfort in his cage, but the past couple of days he's not even fluttering about in his cage, (which normally sends the feathers everywhere and I guess is him stretching his wings) and today, I had him out of the cage, he tried to fly to it from my hand but he sort of 'fell' to the floor. And wouldn't fly up. (He hopped back on to my hand and I lifted him). Is this normal? He's lost some of his bigger feathers recently... is this part of moulting?

3) And how much one on one time should you give your budgie? His cage is near the table, so he's there when we're having breakfast & dinner as a family, and usually chatters away over us, and I talk to him when I have my lunch and usually open up his cage etc. The days I work and feel really guilty he has the radio on :) In fact, the radio is generally on all the time for him. :D Except when it's time for bed.

Oh, and where do I find shreadable/foraging toys? (something I read on the other site about behaviour and boredom on the other site).

Hi!!!

1. Not all birds like bird baths so he might not take to it. You could give him some wet lettuce leaves in it and he light be tempted to splash about in it, but he also might not. Two of my birds LOVE the bird bath and go crazy when I put it out for them. Others have never been in. He has it there is he wishes to use it. You can also spray him with some water to freshen him up, especially in warmer weather. He might enjoy it. :)

2. I've never had this issue myself. It might be that with him not coming out so much and moulting, he's not as capable? I'm not sure on this one. I'm sure some others will have some ideas and opinions about this.

3. This all depends on the level of bond you want him to have with you. If you want a deeper bond and for him to be more tame, then you can look at the training and bonding section for some tips. My birds don't have lots of one on one time with me but we share a lot of time in the same room when they are having out of cage time.
I'll let others with solo birds weigh in on this. :)

4. Pets at home online has lots of toys like this. I'd recommend kabobs as a birdie favourite. They might look pretty boring but birds go crazy for it! :)

Hi and :welcome: to Talk Budgies!

Some budgies enjoy bathing and others don't.
There are various things you can try. You may also find they ignore the bath for a long time and then suddenly one day will decide to try it like it!

I'd suggest you either put a shallow bowl with water in or on top the cage or provide your budgie with a little water in his bath every few days.

You can also try placing a few fresh basil leaves or some lettuce leaves in the water. That may interest him in the bath.

Some budgies love to rub against or roll on wet leaves.
You can hang wet romaine lettuce or kale leaves in the cage or place them in a shallow dish in or on the cage to see if your budgie likes them.

Other budgies simply don't enjoy bathing which is fine as all budgies are cleaning and oiling their feathers when they preen.

It does sound as though your budgie is currently molting since he's losing flight feathers. Some budgies become less active during their molts as it takes a lot of energy to grow those feathers.
You can give him egg food and flax seed.

It sounds like you and your family are giving your budgie a good amount of interaction.

Shreddable toys are available through most pet stores as well as on-line.

Welcome to talk budgies. Not much I can add to what Therm and Deborah have told you. Are you sure Rio is a boy ? The cere looks very light in that photo, it would be good to see some closeups of the cere in natural light...:)

Welcome to TB :)
Rio is very cute :)
The falling to the ground is concerning. Were his wings clipped when you got him? It could be the molt but if it was my bird I would bring him to an avian vet for a check-up. It is good to have an annual health check regardless so that you are on top of things.

I hope he improves soon.

Rio's gender was verified when Billyshriner first got him on the forum in a post I made back in October. :) Say Hi to Rio

Hello and welcome I tend to agree with Niamh if he were my budgie I would be taking him for a wellness check to be sure. Even when moulting budgies can manage to fly\hover back to the cage usually.

Hey there and I'm so glad you've decided to join the forums! :welcome:

Did Emma convince you? ;) :p

Rio is a beautiful boy and you've been given great advice from the previous other posters. The last link posted is wonderful, if shipping to the U.S from UK wasn't so expensive, I'd buy all their things in half a heartbeat!

If you have any questions after reading through the links provided by Deborah, be sure to ask as we'd love to help.

I hope to see little Rio around the forums, as well as yourself, of course.
