Scared to take my budgie to the vet.

2240 Views 15 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  StarlingWings
So I’ve had my budgie for about a week now. He has been sneezing frequently. Dry sneezes I believe. It is a little cold in my room where his cage is (maybe around 65-70 degrees usually) but I purchased him a snuggle up bird warmer for his cage. He sometimes just sits on his perch blinking slowly while other times he’s very active playing with toys and jumping around. I made a vet visit for Saturday but after reading some people’s experience with taking their budgie to the vet I’m kind of second guessing? He’s still new. He’s pretty hand tamed but I don’t wanna stress him out with a vet visit since I heard some budgies have died at the vet due to stress and heart attacks. Could use some advise. Ty!

Hi, Welcome to Talk Budgies!

The purpose of this forum is to promote the BEST PRACTICES in the care of budgies for their optimal Health and Well-Being.

Snuggle Huts are not recommended for budgies as you will see in the link below:

Dangers of Rope, Snuggle Huts, Fabric and Tasseled Toys

Is it dry in your room? If so, a warm mist humidifier would be a good option for your budgie.

65 - 70 degrees is an acceptable temperature for your bird. Are you covering the cage at night?
Top, three sides and 1/3 of the way down the front. Make sure you have a night light to prevent night frights.

Taking your budgie to an Avian Vet is a good thing to do when you get a new bird.
Avian Vets have special training to determine the cause of symptoms resulting from illness or trauma.
This is important as "regular" vets will often overlook symptoms that are quickly obvious to an Avian Vet.
When you rely on anyone who has not had training in Avian diagnosis and care, you may be delaying effective treatment.
This can prolong suffering that may be avoidable.
The bird will often require a more intense, prolonged treatment with a poorer chance of full recovery than it would have if you seek prompt professional diagnosis and treatment at the first sign of illness.
If there are no Avian Vets near you, please find an Exotic Pet Veterinarian with experience in dealing with small birds.
Having your budgie examined by an Avian Vet allows you to develop a good relationship with the vet in case your bird needs care for an injury or illness in the future. Additionally, it is always helpful for the vet to have a baseline for your bird to refer to should it need future treatment.

Hey thanks for the response. It’s not a snuggle hut. It’s a snuggle up warmer. It’s like a heater for the cage. Also I believe the room is dry. I purchased a humidifier but I think it’s too soon to tell if it’s doing anything. I’m just scared of the stress a vet trip and car ride would cause my budgie :(
When you take the bird in the car, follow the tips in this link:

Traveling by Car with your Budgie

The majority of budgies can easily handle the stress from visiting an Avian Vet unless they have a genetic condition.

Having the budgie examined is a better choice than not having it done.

When using the warm mist humidifier, you can put a couple of crops of 100% Pure Eucalyptus Essential Oil in the water.
This will help to open the budgie's airways and make it easier for him/her to breathe.

Is the budgie male or female? What have you named it?

Ok ty! I will be taking him to the vet tomorrow. It is a boy and his name is Rito! Is a warm mist humidifier a certain type of humidifier or is it just using warm water?
There are warm mist humidifiers and cool mist humidifiers. You want to get a Warm Mist Humidifier.

@FaeryBee Just got back from the vet! Wanted to say thank you for calming my nerves about the trip. They said he was very healthy and they did a stool/throat swab. He's a little grumpy but he still can't resist millet lol. But I'm happy to know he's here for the long run!

Rito is a very handsome and debonair young man! Perhaps you'd like to start an on-going picture thread for him in the "Budgie Pictures" section of the forum. 💚

I'm so glad you took him to the vet!
