I noticed my budgies tail was bobbing so i immediately separated him from my others and then monitored him and saw he was sneezing more than normal and sometimes it sounded like he was congested when he breathed. i set up a humidifier for him and ran a hot shower for a bit to help clear out his respiratory system. i dropped him off at the vet today and they called and told me they aren't really seeing any sings of illness, just slight labored breathing but other than that he is eating good and his droppings look normal and the vet tested his droppings and everything came back all clear. From the symptoms i noticed yesterday I'm almost positive he has a respiratory infection and I'm worried the vet is going to send him back to me without doing anything. could he just be hiding his illness from the vet cause he feels threatened? Is there anything i should be asking the vet to do or check for? i have not spoken to the actual vet, just the tech and she said i will be able to pick him up sometime tomorrow. any advice on where to go from here is appreciated

If they are seeing slight labored breathing what reason are they giving for that and why did they keep him in the hospital overnight if they do not think anything is wrong? I would insist on speaking to the vet tomorrow and if they still are saying they do not see anything wrong ask them if you continue to see him sneezing and congested at home if they will prescribe you meds without having to bring him back to the hospital, since they have just examined him. Is it an avian vet that saw him?

thanks for the reply, she is and avian vet, i spoke with her last night. the reason they kept him over night is because they were very busy so the vet didn't get to examine him till after they were technically already closed so I'm going to pick him up today. she said he has a small upper respiratory infection so she injected him with an antibiotic that will last 2 weeks and is sending home some vitamins to add to his food or water. she said he's doing really good, still eating and drinking and perching well so I'm hoping i caught it early enough and the antibiotics will work. the only other thing I'm concerned with is he was in contact with my 3 other budgies so I'm worried they may have caught this from him. I'm going to keep him separate from them for the next two weeks but is there anything i can do for the others in the meantime to help make sure they don't get sick as well?

I think you caught it early, that's great. Just keep him separate and keep a close watch on your other birds and if you see even a slight indication of illness let the vet know. When you pick up your bird ask the vet about your other birds and see if she has any suggestions for them during this time.

Glad you were able to get your little one in to the vet promptly for the proper diagnosis and treatment plan.
Please be sure to update us in this thread as his recovery progresses.
