Hello! I've been lurking about this site for a couple months now, gathering information as I've searched for it in preparation of getting a bird. You've all been incredibly helpful already! I'm still preparing but I'm nearly ready to pick up a budgie.

I still haven't decided on which type: English or "American" but I know I want a pretty little green girl. I've gotten a cage that's of good size for her and a plus one if need be. I just need to install the cage somewhere stable and safe from my roommate's kitten. I even collected corn husks to make some toys. I'm really just waiting on the finishing touches.

I'm extremely excited!

Any advice is appreciated and welcome.

Welcome to the forums and the soon-to-be ever exciting world of budgie ownership! :)
It's great that you have been doing research prior to getting your budgie and I'm glad you have been finding Talk Budgies very informative.
Since you are new to pet birds in general and if you haven't done so already, I suggest you start by reading the info on the stickies at the Diet and Nutrition as well as the Training and Bonding section of the forums.

Good luck on your search for the perfect little budgie girl and feel free to share some pics when you have her all settled in your home! ;)

Hi and :welcome: to Talk Budgies!

I'm glad to hear you've been doing your research and I'm going to guess you've already read all the wonderful links I usually provide to new members. But... just in case you haven't, they are in this thread below!

I'll be looking forward to meeting your new little girl when you have her home and all settled in. For safety's sake, I'd suggest you make sure your budgie is housed in a room your room-mate's kitten will not have access to when no one is around.

Hello and welcome to the posting side of TB.

I'm very impressed to read that you've already spent a couple of months gathering information. There is so much you must know already. A lot of it will come in handy I'm sure, and your experience will be all the more serene for it. Well done!

I look forward to seeing pictures of your new friend when you've found her.

As for English (show) vs American (Pet) budgies, it seems that English tend to be quieter. Although of course there are no rules when it comes to budgies, just generalities with as many exceptions as individual birds :)

Our English Grey, Clouds, seems to be the perfect example of its type. He doesn't play, doesn't climb, doesn't walk, doesn't need anyone, doesn't look curiously at anything. In short, he's an archetypical jaded Brit. Yet under all his snobbish snootiness, he's really just a cute little bird and we love him very much.
Our recent addition to the family is a little pet budgie named Sky and is totally the opposite of Clouds. He's an absolute delight to be around: constantly playing and seeking attention, inquisitive, uncoordinated, funny and very affectionate.
I'm sure that, despite the generalities, there are plenty of English budgies who are just like Sky and many pet budgies a lot like Clouds... So I guess watch out for those traits when you seek your new friends, keep the general trends in mind but have a close look at how the bird acts around other birds as well as how they react to people.

But most importantly, follow your heart. You'll know when you've met your bird.

All the best!

Oh my goodness thanks everyone for being so welcoming!

Special thanks to Didoushkaya for their bit about the types' differences (even if I already read up on that too hehe). :p

I got a couple extra things this week and the hardware for the setup I have going for her. Her setup by the way is in my room so I can cut off access to her from the kitten. I just need to get her food and I'll be 100% ready! :D

I'll post when I've gotten her! TONS of pictures to come!

Also, StarlingWings, her name will be Éowyn. We're huge Tolkien nerds over here.

I love it  It's perfect.

It goes without saying I'm also a huge Tolkien nerd :giggle: My hen's name is Mallorn....which is "gold tree" in Sindarin

Had a pair of fish named Éowyn and Theoden

I can't wait to meet little Éowyn!
