I am going to start sprouting for us and Fluff. I thought I would keep a "journal" of sorts on it for those who want to give it a try. As there is much "dos and "don'ts" concerning sprouting, concerns over hygiene, what to use, where to get seeds, etc. I thought I would post my experience to help others as I learn to sprout.

First off: I am using http://sproutpeople.org/ instructions on how to sprout. I have never sprouted before so I decided now is not the time to "wing it." They have a "sprouting school" for those interested.
I will post pictures as I go and hopefully in a few days see how Fluff likes these little tasty morsels.

Here we go:

1) I boiled everything. Sprouts seem to have a reputation for growing other "non-yummy" things on them so sanitation is a must.




2) Here are the pieces that came with the bird sprouting kit. The easy sprout, instructions and sprouting seeds



3) Putting the easy sprout together: It has an "outer layer" to catch drainage, an "inner layer" that hold the seeds and provides for air circulation, a small seed insert and a lid.

4) Seeds (2/3 cup)


5) Putting the seeds on to soak. They soak for 8-12 hours so I will change this water and perform the first rinse and drain in the morning

At the same time I bought a second easy sprout and a few samplers for us as well:

Our grain sampler:


I have already sprouted the Amber Waves of Grain mix. I ate half of it this morning with milk, sliced grapes and a touch of honey. It was different but so good.

The finished Amber Waves of Grain:



I also have their Italian Mix growing as well. It takes roughly a week and I started it on Friday night so we are roughly half way there.

Both in their place for the night. Currently they live on the top of the fridge. You can see the sprouter on the left in the "grow" position (sticking out of the outer shell) and the sprouter on the right in the "soak" position.

I was hesitant initially to boil them as they say "top rack only" in dishwasher however they stood up to a rolling boil for 5 minutes without softening or melting. I didn't boil past 5 minutes however.

This mornings seed after its overnight soak:



The water after the soak. They encourage you to use this on house plants as it is full of nutrients. I have one houseplant and it didn't need water this morning



The Italian Mix this morning - it's about to grow out the top of the container and it still has a few days.

Updated for today:

The bird sprouts are more than done (I could have pulled them this morning) but I am going to wait for tomorrow morning to see how he likes them.



The Italian Mix:

It technically has two more days to go but I started sampling them today and they are tasty little things. They are hardly ****ing in the container anymore.

Well...
Thus far I have sprouted for us "Amber Waves of Grain" and the "Italian Mix."
The Amber Waves of Grain were chewing and slightly sweet. I made them into a breakfast cereal by adding a bit of milk, sliced sweet grapes and a touch of honey. It was chewy but very filling and delicious.
I plan on putting the Italian Mix on chicken sandwiches - a rather traditional method but I always love sprouts on my sandwiches when we go places that offer them.

Go with a variety sampler or a sampler of the type of sprout you want to sample. They are small packages and you get a bit of each so it works well to explore what you like.

They have much smaller ones (5 samples to a kit) in just about type of sprout (leafy, beans, grains, etc) or variety ones. Since you aren't a big sprout eater - start with what interests you and go from there.

I got my kit yesterday but did not order seeds yet. I am going to start with the "Totally Organics - soak or dry seed mix" for the birds. If its as easy as said I will probably buy 1 or 2 more sprouters and some seeds for Linda and I. I too love sprouts on a sandwich. After watching you and your succsess it probably wont be long. Thanks again for all the nice details.

Update:

The last pic of this batch of seeds for Fluff. I did grown them significantly past when they said to pull them just out of curiosity. I will probably pull them earlier rather than later next time as Fluff doesn't much care for the larger roots. It went very well.

Forgive the fuzziness of the pic (I will try for a better one later) as the camera couldn't decide which of those tiny things to focus on. I'll get DH to fiddle with the settings and figure it out.

Finally started a batch. I am trying the seed mix I got from Choppers toys.It is Hemp,Nyjer,Flax,Safflower,Canary,White proso. I started the soak at 7 am.
I can post results here for mine or start another thread. Let me know what you think.
Maybe this could become a sprout sticky and all post on this thread to keep it in one place?

I started the soak yesterday at 7am
Drained and rinsed at 8pm
Rinsed this morning at 7am...noticed a couple sprouting roots on safflower:)

Sprouts are done :D. Added the sprouts to the daily veg mash, lettuce and birdie bread mix. Put em on top and they all went nuts over them.
