I noticed that my budgie makes few days (2nd day) weird noises at night around 2am - 3am. I have no idea what this means. First off the closest I can get is like the sound when a budgie drinks water. I hear her making the sound 2-4 times (like she wants to drink noise) and then sometimes a tiny mini high pitch chirp. Then when its queit it starts again. I automaticly think she needs something to drink because theres something with her troat. Its like choking sound but strange. And there is nothing wrong when its daylight. She's playful and active. Any idea what this sound means or any idea what it causes? Or is this pretty normal?

(Update: it stopped now (for now), but im still curious whats causing this)

Thank you in advance.

I have never heard any sound when a budgie drinks water. They will sometimes sleep mumble and you will hear little chirps and squeaks but it does not sound like a choking noise.

I meant the sound which is close is ''described'' as ''drinking water'', it is not that after she drinks water.. I just try to describe the sound because I got no idea how to explain this strange sound she's making. and no I do not think its spasm or something.. Basicly she makes only the sounds during at night, further she is healthy and playful and well. I do think she is fast tired but I am not sure. Maybe because she struggles to sleep at night too.

I'm looking forward for other explanations.

Hmm I see. I noticed today more.
It also sounds similar to hiccup / crying sounds. Sometimes loud sometimes very tiny sounds. Like 1x peeping high pitch. Thinking of Sleeptalk or cry ? sounds sad sometimes. Then after that again hearing the hiccup thing. Ithough it could be bacterial but on the other hand its just only during the night.

well like faerybee said it just maybe she is making noises in her sleep, it's only happening at night.

Some birds do talk in their sleep, mine does when she takes naps during the day. She makes little squeak-like chirps and has ever since she was a baby, she even changed the sound for a while when we had another bird in the house for a while. Since it doesn’t sound like respiratory distress this is most likely what it is.

Hi Starling,

Thank you alot. hmm I see. So it could indeed be the little chirps of sleep, but then again after that mine does like breathing (strange) sounds after the chirps so I get in the alert-mode at night too. I will also to make sure to visit the vet doc to make double check there is nothing wrong with her. Although yesterday she slept well and not making sounds at all. I note also shes very fast tired so I see it could be a good idea, got appointment on friday next week. So I can ask the vet about those two things.

when I asked someone why my budgie does this I was told that it just means she's up when she's not supposed to be. Which I think is kinda funny. if it is choking noises, your bird might be mimicking it off of the t.v. or something.
