Just curious -- why do some spangles have no (or very few) throat spots, while others have more?

Just because two birds are the same mutation it doesn't mean they will be identical. There is considerable variation between individual birds of any mutation

Many spangles have missing throat spots. This is probably caused by reduced black melanin, which also causes less markings on the spangles back and wings
