Weird cere color?

776 Views 13 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  FaeryBee
I have two budgies. Male and female. The male is a sapphire and the female is an albino. Im very concerned for the male . The vet had said it was most likely a male but im still confused. His cere color is kind of a tint of green if im not colorblind. Its not a full solid color. Could it be aging?. Or maybe a dye from a toy or possibly a sickness. Im praying for them. If you have an answer or a guess that would be awesome.

Hi there and welcome to the forums,

Your budgie is very cute. Your vet has given you you inaccurate information; are they an avian vet?
This bird is a female, not male. There is no possibility of it being male whatsoever. Whitish or pale blue ceres are indicative of female 👍🏻

Additionallt, sapphire is not a budgie color mutation. She appears to be cobalt blue 🫐 If you would like confirmation on her mutation, please upload more photos if you have a chance!

Are they your first budgies? Additionally, are you sure your other budgie is female? It would be great to see photos of both of them 👍🏻

Meanwhile, you’ve come to a great place to learn the best of budgie care practices. Please be sure to read through the forums many budgie articles and “stickies” to ensure you’re up to date on everything! If you have any questions after reading through things, please feel free to ask as we’d love to help.

Hope to hear updates soon!

Hi! Thank you. And yes my albino is a female. I was wishing that icy (the budgie shown in the photo) was a male but its no worries!. They love each-other alot. Icy is more friendly and frost (the albino) is more standoffish. Thank you for informing me!. Im not sure what an avian is!
Feel free to tell me!
An avian vet is a vet that specializes in treating birds and has gone through specialized education in addition to standard vet training to accomplish it.

Oh! Alright! I’ll have to look into that. They have a big tall cage with plenty of room to fly around. I let icy out every once in a while . Im still trying to gain frosts trust. Shes a stubborn one. Thank you so much for informing me! I appreciate it!.
It's great news that both your budgies are females as you don't have to worry about accidental breeding :D I look forward to meeting them both!

There are not as many avian vets as there are vets that treat just cats and dogs so many people travel a far distance to see one, here is a link to help you find one, https://www.aav.org/search/custom.asp?id=1803 enter your city and state in the appropriate fields and open the radius to more than 5 miles and see what comes up. Many vet clinics that treat exotics also treat birds, it is important to see a vet that has a lot of experience with birds because they will often notice things that a vet without a lot of experience with birds will not notice.

Thank you so much! I will make sure to post more about them. And now icys cere is turning tan! I bought them together since they were in the same cage in the store. I never knew albinos were rare!

Albinos aren't really rare for budgies but they are definitely a very pretty mutation :)

Here they are together in the cage. I can take a close up picture of the albino to confirm on her gender.

Looks like the cere is brownish, that indicates she is a mature female.

Yes and thank you, i have confirmed on her gender earlier today and she is an older female.

The cobalt had broken her wing, (she got bit by a dog, not a full bite just a nip, she is perfectly fine now and she was given painkiller and taken to an avian vet, we still have the medicine if one of them gets hurt) so thats why in pictures her wing will be droopy. She can fly perfectly fine. If there are any ways to fix the droopy wing please feel free to tell me,
If you have dogs, you need to have your budgies in a room the dogs cannot access.
