Hello,

Can anyone tell me what my budgie is doing in this video?
https://vimeo.com/195160780/e111a1e2b3

Some background info - he is a rescue budgie and my first bird! He is male, older than 1.5 years, and is a lone budgie who is never really alone as he keeps me company while I work from home. He was hand tamed by a previous owner, but in the 9 months we've had him he only likes to be patted and handled at night. During the day he usually sits on my computer and talks to me while I work.

A couple of days ago he started jumping up on my hand during the day, nibbling and pecking at it. If I hadn't put him down I think he might have stayed there all day! He seemed to be getting really worked up. He did it again all day today. The bites hurt a little bit, but mostly it just seems like he's exploring with his mouth. I have so far just been letting him do it and staying quite calm and still.

So I have a few questions
1) Is this an affectionate behaviour?
2) Is it a mating behaviour?
3) Is he trying to assert himself as the alpha budgie?

What do you guys think?

How cute is he!?
And to the questions, as I see it.

1 yes
2 it would seem he is very much in love with your hand
3 Looks more like 1 and 2 :)

As to the mating behavior, don't let it get out of hand, so to speak, meaning, if he starts rubbing his "bum" on your hand, turn it or make him step up on your other hand, move him back to his cage, the computer etc. anything to snap him out of it, within reason of course :)

And welcome to the forums, hope to see more of him, he looks and sounds like a real sweetie, and full of life, that's for sure :)

Thank you so much!

Oooh hahaha alright then, wasn't expecting that! I was wondering why he'd been so friendly lately....

There's a lot to learn about budgies isn't there! Thanks for your advice

Hi! :welcome: to Talk Budgies

To help with calm your budgie's urge to mate, ensure he has access to lots of flight/climbing exercise.
Provide two or three swings to encourage him to keep moving and tire himself out.
Chew toys like Kabobs and other shredding toys are helpful and you should provide plenty of wood to chew--especially when he is in condition.

Reduce the number of hours of light he gets as well as the percent of protein and other foods used to bring birds into condition.

Please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.

That is a very cute budgie and I love his color. The favorite shredding toys of my male budgie are definitely Bird Kabobs and Planet Pleasures shredders. He went crazy for each of these when I introduced them and I highly recommend.

When I first put in the kabobs, my budgie spent a week purely focused on destroying them. (And he did. And thus kept very busy.) Once he got that out of his system... he now chews them more when he's in the mood.

Welcome to the forums....

Hi FaeryBee, thanks so much for your warm welcome! I would have replied sooner, but after I posted that message we had a power and internet outage for 3 days! Good to be back online.

That is great advice, I think Santa may bring him some chewing toys for Xmas :)

Thanks StarlingWings, I feel very welcomed! Sorry to not reply sooner, we lost our internet for 3 days!

Thanks so much BlueBirdNYC! I will most definitely look those up and put them on his list to Santa. Nice to meet you and thanks for the advice I really appreciate it!

I love your video; it's so cool to see other budgies acting the same way mine does! Apollo has been doing the same thing to me more and more lately. I think it's so much fun that he wants to come and play with me even when I don't have a treat or a toy in my hand

When he first started doing it sometimes he would get too rough (I got the impression he wasn't aware of his own strength yet). His nibbles turned into bites that kind of hurt, and sometimes it felt like he was trying to peel my nails right off. To get him to play nicer I would say "ouch", put him down, and walk away for a while. This seems to have done the trick because now he doesn't bite hard anymore, and doesn't pull on my nails the way he was. Every once in a while he gets extra excited and gets a little rougher, but all I have to do is say ouch and he dials it back a bit.
