Hi!
I need some advice bird lovers.:budgie::budgie:

This is Kokos. He's about 6 months old and I bought him at a pet store about 4 months ago (I know one shouldn't do that but it was a very well taken care of zoo pet store and all the budgies looked healthy and normal, for a change...)
Anyway, this isn't my first bud (I had one who died of old age about 2 years ago), so I'm used to budgies.
However, Kokos has recently started nibbling on threads on his toy thing in his cage. He usually does so when he's sleepy or just ... in nibbling mood? Sort of reminds me of a child using a safety blanket or something. We tried moving it furthur away from the branches so he wouldn't nibble, but then he started climbing the ropes and continue biting instead. He doesn't seem to bite the threads of, just nibble on them in his mouth.

So I'm wondering what this behavior means? Is it normal? Is it healthy, or should I cut the threads off? Thought to ask you guys first in case he's just playing around. But I also thought it might be unhealthy for him and he might turn into a little wierdo from it haha?

(We're very social with him - he's still very shy but I know he's gonna be a big cuddler later on. :) He gets in and out of his cage by himself every day and gets exercise.)

Look at that smug face! :budgie: Please give me advice if you have any! :)

Hi and :welcome: to Talk Budgies!

Kokos is adorable. :D
While he is probably trying to "preen" the threads, you need to remove the toy from his cage. Ingestion of the cotton fibers can lead to impaction of your budgies crop and possibly death. :(

To familiarize yourself with the forums, please take the time to read through all of the How To Guides, the FAQs and the stickies located at the top of each section of the forum.
You'll find most of your basic questions are answered after you've read through all of them.

I'm looking forward to hearing all about Kokos and hopefully seeing more pictures :photo: of your little cutie soon!!

Aww, Kokos is such a pretty birdie and nice photo. He looks like he really enjoys chewing that thread, but as FaeryBee suggests, cotton fibers can be very harmful ingested. Try to get him more toys that don't have cotton strings like this. We'd also love to see more photos of Kokos!:)

Welcome to Talk Budgies!

Kokos is absolutely stunning--what a handsome little boy! I agree with what's been said, and if he enjoys chewing or "preening" thread, you can get him a toy made of digestible plant fibers which will not hurt him.

It's great to have you here with us on the forums, please ask about anything you're unsure of, and I'm looking forward to seeing a lot more of your handsome boy!

Thank you guys! I cut all the threads off carefully and he is so dissapointed haha. He keeps looking for them now that they're gone. But I'll make sure to buy some sort of biting toy for him. Thanks for the advice, you're the best :)
