Default Calypso's Journal

So yesterday, I bought a pet budgie. He (we think it is a he, the cere is starting to turn blue) is named Casper (after lots of deliberation). He is my bird, but my siblings think he is theirs (I'll set them straight. Just kidding, I'll share of course). At first we set him on top of a large cabinet in our dining room, so that he would feel safe being high up. At first he just sat on the bottom of the cage. After about 2 hours he fluttered up to one of the perches, and then another. That perch is where he slept. This morning I moved his cage into my room. He is doing well, it seems as if he is scared, but getting more comfortable. Oh and Casper is about 6 months old and he is light blue. He is pretty skinny.

Casper has been tweeting up in his cage, and he is moving around a lot more. He seems to be getting pretty comfortable! But I need to remember patience!

Hi Nate and welcome to you and Casper, you are so right in saying Patience is needed. Cover Casper's cage on three sides so on;y the front is visible this will help him settle and feel safer.
Sit near the cage and talk to him, read out loud even. When you are not there leave a radio or tv on for company for him, silence to a budgie is a sign of danger.
Read through the forum's information regarding training it will help you so much .

I'm just wondering...Is it a good sign if Casper doesn't get scared while I'm changing his food and water?

Casper is doing well! I covered his cage so that only the front was showing like you said, and he seems to be doing better. He is getting more comfortable with coming closer to me, and I have been reading to him. He is also a lot more active in his cage, hopping around more, chirping, and playing with toys! I also have left the radio on while I am not there. He seems to enjoy music more than talking. Yesterday I opened his cage and set the food dish right in the opening. I read to him, which he likes, and after a bit he fluttered down to the cage entrance (which was right by me) and started eating! I attached the photo of him eating! He's coming along great! I might try holding the food bowl in my hand, inside his cage later this week.

A new update! Today I found out that my little Casper is actually a girl! I am going to probably change her name to "Cassy"! She is a kind little girl! Her behavior reminded me of what people said boys acted like, so that is why I though that. Plus her blue and white cere...

Setback...when I got home today (Oh and btw, my siblings didn't like the name Cassy so she is now Calyspo) Calypso looked pretty frightened and when I put my hand in the cage for seeds, she flew away and got scared which is a setback since for the past couple days I've been able to put my hand in her cage comfortably. Any ideas on how to comfort her?

Edit: She was also very jumpy, like when I changed her water any slight sound of the cage scared her. I am really worried that 2 days of hard work have gone to waste...

So glad you're coming along with Calypso! She's lovely, and her mutation is normal cobalt Although she was jittery, don't let that set you back, just be a little more distant for a day or two (like putting the food bowl by the door again) and she'll warm up again, I'm sure. All budgies have their days, but it sounds like you're doing a great job so far

After dinner, I came into my room and she raised her wings a bit, but then she started hopping down her cage and eating some millet that I had set there before dinner. Thanks for the positive encouragement. I feel like something scared her, and I hope my presence is comforting. I will be a bit more distant in my taming, just like you said, Thank You!
