Smile Training Nova

I got Nova on November 21th, 2015. She is a rescue and judging by her eyes and cap, I'd say she's at least six months old. The first couple of days she was very stiff, as could be expected. Music really helped relax her and she favors smooth, low voices on the radio over others.

Yesterday,November 23rd, she started really chirping, flying over to her food bowl and eating while I was in the room.

Today, November 24th, I left the room in the morning and she started calling to me. I think she's starting to consider me part of her flock! How exciting.

Right now, I'm still letting her settle in, but I talk to her every chance I get and respond every time she chirps at me.

I offer an open cage when I'm working in the room, but she has yet to get out. It's probably for the best because I'm not sure how she'd react to being outside of her cage. Nonetheless, she seems more calm with the door open(no pesky bars in the way of viewing me) so I leave it.

November 24th, 12:55 A.M.: Nova had her first fly today! It was a little bumpy as she crashed into every wall and the door. It's okay though. She had a good fly around the room for five minutes before I could easily get her on a perch and back in her cage. Now grinding her beak happily. This it the first time I've ever seen her do either of these things, so it's very exciting!

Thank you! I'm very excited for her to really get relaxed and play with her toys a little before I try any training.

Aw, she's lovely!

(PS I wasn't sure what it meant when they grind their beaks but hoped it means they're happy / contented. Your post has reassured me this is the case ).

I'm glad I could put you at ease, Susan! Hearing the beak grinding is so cool for me.

November 26th, 2015: Nova seems to be getting bored, pacing around on her favorite perch. There are two more perches in there and a few toys, so I'm not sure why she acts like this, but I take it as a good sign since before she would hardly move a muscle. I still leave the door open when I'm in the room to give her a chance to fly around

As for bonding, when I came home from my Thanksgiving outings, she seemed very excited to see me. I keep a small stick of millet in her cage and when I came home, she ate from the stick in my hand and I even lured her from side to side(which I couldn't do before).

She's still afraid of my hand, which is too be expected. Especially since I believe she is going through a molt. How often do budgies lose feathers out of molt? As in, do they just lose feathers now and again, or are they suppose to be in molt if they're losing their feathers? I have found a few of her half blue white feathers and put them in a little box to keep as I find them very cute and neat.

Little Nova sounds like she's really starting to love and trust you

Budgies moult a few times a month to a few times a year. Generally, I've found they go through 1-3 major moults a year, with those being the most severe loss of feathers such as wing feathers and tail feathers. Other, smaller moults, where they loose a few feathers as needed, occur in between. It's really up to the individual bird

From my experience, my girl goes through about 2 major moults a year but moults smaller feathers regularly, every month or so.

Thanks for the help, StarlingWings! Nova is just molting little feathers and not very much, so I think it's just one of the mini molts you mentioned.

She's a sweet girl. Recently, she's been getting more comfortable eating and drinking around me. I even caught her tucking one of her legs up while she napped which was absolutely adorable! I play 'the blinking game' with her when she's nervous and she seems to enjoy that.

Still though, she only uses one of the perches 99% of the time and has yet to touch her toys. It's only been six days though, so I'm not too concerned.
