I wanted to post updates on Kaze but thought I should move out of the Introduction thread.
In case you missed the intro, here is our story in short:
I adopted Kaze on Monday, Nov. 30th 2015. So he has been here about 2 weeks now. The lady I got him from said he is around 3 years old. He spent those 3 years in a 10x8x16 cage with the original plastic perches, no toys and a seed only diet. I believe they did talk to him often but she said he had only been out of his cage once in the last year.
My history: I love animals but haven't had a pet bird in a very long time. I have been wanting to buy a bird and decided to take Kaze and learn as I go. After days on google I found this forum and love it!! It is so helpful
For the first 5 days he didn't eat or drink anything! I tried all types of food until I realized he would only eat the brand of seed he was fed for the last 3 years. I have been mixing it with a better brand of seed and he will eat it as long as it is 50/50 mix. I have tried fresh oranges, apples, spinach and cooked pasta but he will not eat it. I also tried millet and the seed treat bars that you place in the cage and he will not try those either. I plan to buy some pellet food tomorrow and will mix it with the seed.
Up until a few days ago he would bite me very hard and pretty much attack me when I put my hand in his cage. I started removing the top of it while in a closed bathroom and after a while he came out and perched on my hand. Now when I remove the top he is out in less than 2 seconds and on my hand. His current cage is 16x14x23 and has small doors. I have a larger cage with a door at the top that pulls down with a perch on it on my Christmas wish list
I am trying to train him to come to me from a distance when I call him but with him not being interested in any treats, I have no reward for him. I am afraid to let him out in the larger rooms until I know I can get him to come to me. I also have trouble getting him back in his cage when play time is over. He will be on my hand and when I get him close to it, he will fly and land on my head. Then this repeats over and over again lol
I have a million questions but I think this is enough info for now. I think getting him to eat something other than seed is what I will focus on right now.
Here is a funny pic from today's 1.5 hour hang out in the bathroom LOL
