Default Elsa's training journal

Hello, I've decided to start a trainging journal for my boy Elsa (my four year old got naming rights). Elsa has settled in fairly well. Our dog Tara is very confused by Elsa and sits whinning at the cage everytime someone pays attention to Elsa. My younger sister is also convinced that she knows all regarding budgies and keeps trying to claim Elsa as hers which is irritating because 1. I covered all of the costs for Elsa and am the caregiver for Elsa. And 2. Elsa doesn't seem to like her much at all.

Elsa has started singing along to music from the LOTR and Hobbit soundtracks. He's actively going to the cage door whenever I am nearby wanting out. He has adjusted fairly well to new foods (vegetables) that have been introduced but doesn't seem too fond of Millet Spray. Today he went to my shoulder and was sitting there while I was on my phone for a bit. I plan to keep working on bonding with Elsa this week before moving onto anything else.

Sarah,

It sounds like Elsa is settling in wonderfully! My girl Mallorn also loves the Hobbit/LoTR soundtracks--I love movie soundtracks, and she has her favourites for sure! She loves Thor, as well

I would be very frank with your sister and tell her exactly how you feel about Elsa. It's important that she recognises that you are Elsa's primary caregiver and although she can certainly speak with him and things like that, ultimately it comes down to you to care for him. I'm sure she'll understand.

Keep up the great work with Mr. Elsa! I'm sure that he will continue to make wonderful progress with you

I'm not 100% percent sure but I think Elsa was purposly antagonizing our dog Tara today. I had come inside and heard Elsa making a loud call then the dog would go running down to see what was up. Elsa would then be silent until Tara went back upstairs before he would make the noise and Tara would go running again. I watched it happen 3 times before I went downstairs where Elsa promptly stopped making the noise when I was in the same room. I'm not sure if Elsa has found a new "game" to entertain himself with. I'm going to keep an eye on it to see if/when it happens again.

oh my lol.sounds like Elsa has learned to tease your dog.I,ve heard of birds before teasing dogs and cats making sounds to confuse them lol.lets hope this won't cause any problems for the dog.

Lol budgies just love to imitate humans and certain sounds. My Gracie has learned a few tricks to confuse me already lol.she makes me laugh.
Blessings and we're here if you need us.

So I a undertaking a new project for Elsa. I saw some really great ideas for PVC playgyms for budgies and am going to attempt to create a "tree" and a high perch for Elsa so he has more to do when he is out of his cage.

The last two days Elsa hasn't wanted to come out of the cage which is strange for him when I asked my sister about it she let me know she had forced him out of the cage while I was out the other day and she chased him to get him back into the cage which seems to have given him an aversion to being out of the cage. I had some very strong words for my sister when she told me this morning. I'm hoping that the play areas will help to show him that out of the cage isn't scary again.

Oh dear, that's bad news.

Your sister sounds like she is what we might call "a loose cannon". You are going to have to be very stern and explain to her why & how she mustn't do what she has done, and she is undoing the work you are putting in to tame and bond with Elsa.

Can you make her understand how she is in danger of damaging Elsa's trust? And perhaps causing him actual injury by grabbing him?

And perhaps spoiling everybody else's liking for her?

I think she got it this time with how ticked off I was at her, she should also know better considering she's 19 and I've seen her reading the budgie books I have. My 4 year old daughter listens better about what to do around Elsa. I think it's going to stick this time.

Greetings I hope things workout soon.hopefully your sister will know the importance of bird safety.doesn't take much for a budgie to lose trust in someone when they are frightened or so.blessings and take care.

Keep us posted and we're here for you

That's very good to hear. And a relief. Hoping that the step backwards that might have happened with Elsa's trust & confidence will soon be turning into a fast forward again

Perhaps the incident might even have been a valuable lesson in budgie care for your 4 year old? If so, it would be a more positive outcome.
