Default Tiki's Training Journal

I owned my cheeky Tiki for pretty much a month now. So far, he is eating out of my hand and today I got him to perch on my finger(with a few bites of millet as a reward)! I just started working with him on the "step up" command today, and it seems like he is quite a quick learner!
Once I know he has this command mastered (shouldn't take too long, seeing how he's already doing so well about it),I am going to slowly try to have him leave his cage and check out the "outside domain" and hopefully play with his activity gym.
Another thing I'm trying to work on, is getting Tiki to eat his veggies! At the pet store I bought him from, the clerk told me that he was never fed them, only the seed and pellet mix. I've been offering them as often as I can (at least every other day). No luck really with carrots or cherries, except for a tiny nibble. But he was nibbling at the kale I offered to him via my hand quite a bit today, but not actually eating it.

I wonder if I should offer a multivitamin until he's eating the veggies consistently? He mainly goes for his Vitakraft Menu complex diet,as well as the Zupreem fruity pellets, but not as much as the Vitakraft..wish he'd go for the Zupreem more, lol.

Jessica, it seems that everything with Tiki is going wonderfully so far! He's such a sweet boy

I'm glad he's eating some pellets, even if he hasn't taken to veggies quite yet. But you're doing great with giving him lots of veggie options and I'm sure that soon he'll try some

Keep up the good work and I can't wait for more updates!

Thanks Starling!
Today marks the first official day of Tiki enthusiastically exploring the outside world of his cage aka my budgie proofed bedroom! I attempted to take him out yesterday on my finger, and he did sit on a perch I mounted outside his cage for a few minutes, but then he got spooked and retreated back to his humble abode. Each time I tried to get him back on my finger to take him out, he kept retreating back, not wanting to come out.

Today I tried Plan B, by taking the roof off his cage, as well as just leaving the cage door open. Within 10 minutes or so (while having some upbeat electro music playing), his adventurous side took over and he hovered right out the top of the cage and onto his play gym, and man does he hover high for having his wings clipped! He did hover around the room a few more times, landing on a wicker basket on the floor, my husband and I's bed, my work desk, and back to the play gym again. He seems to be taking to the play area quite well.

My hubby and I had him out of the cage for about an hour before we put him back in. He simply hopped back on my finger and went back in with no problems at all

Still no luck on the fruits and veggies. I've been offering him carrots (either chopped up really small, grated, and shredded as often as I can though...keeping my fingers crossed!
He eats his pellets more often than I though, which is great!
And he will also sit on my hand and eat out of the palm

Here are some pictures!

This was taken during plan A, where I had the perch outside the cage and tried taking him out myself.

This was after plan B, where I took the cage roof off and left the door open. Success! Right onto the play gym!

He took claim on my laptop

Tiki is a stunner, what a clever little one. You can offer some basil, thyme, a little lettuce, sprouts, try making some birdy bread or a mash. Have a read in the diet and nutrition Sub Forum for some idea's.

What a beautiful boy!

I'm so glad he's decided it's lots of fun to hang out in the "big room" with his mum and dad! It looks like he had a great time

Congratulations on reaching that milestone!

Thanks so much (to Starling and Cathy as well)! Heck yes, he loves his millet!

Update on Tiki's progress:
I kind of hit a wall in getting him to step up. Anymore he will do it occasionally(more so during the day when he's more awake), but when he doesn't want to he will sometimes try to bite. Last week he did a series of 5 quick bites in succession on my finger...didn't feel very good! lol.
Alongside with trying to respect his boundaries a bit more, tonight I tried a different, less direct approach and held my finger more in front of him and lightly tough him with it instead of pushed up to his belly-it worked!

He has been really good tonight. I've been spending more one on one time with him, so I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it? He's been just nonstop chirping, playing with his all of his toys-he almost shot a basket for the first time in his basketball hoop! And I also caught him chewing on both his cuttlebone and mineral block for the first time tonight too!

I also bought him a Mimic Me recorder in an effort to get him to talk (doesn't matter to me if he does or doesn't-I'll still love him either way!). I'm currently trying to get him to say "Ello mate!" I've had it for about a week now (I play it when I'm at work), and no luck yet, but sometimes he makes these odd noises like he's practicing? I really don't know, lol.

He's still a little iffy on coming out of the cage on his own. But, I've been leaving his cage door open every day for several hours so if he chooses to he can come out.

I believe you are making great progress with Tiki and he certainly is one cute little guy!

The picture of him "showing off his good side" and the one right below it gave me a big grin!

Such a beautiful bird!
Good luck! Good to see you having fun with your bird!
I am also currently taking my two and teaching them the step up command.
To get them used to veggies and such, what I did was cut the veggies/fruit as small as a I could (of course, big enough for them to actually chew it) and sprinkled some of the seeds and millet onto it. (I did it on my hand)
They'll eventually eat the veggies ^^

Thanks Deborah and Yuuki! Yuuki, I have been trying to get him to eat corn (which was frozen) which was blended up into small pieces, seed/millet sprinkled on top and served in a dish. I'm trying to remain hopeful about it,but still no luck.

I had Tiki out of his cage today and a few times, he went to perch on my shoulder on his own. He then started to 'preen' my hair, and even my face! (no makeup or hair product to worry about him ingesting). He was very lightly nibbling on it, so it tickled lol. I'm assuming it was preening?
