Default Tiffanie's Training Journal (Ongoing Thread)

I decided I want to attempt clicker training with my budgies. The first time I attempted clicker training was with my dog a year ago. I failed miserably. I'm determined to do better this time.

I will begin with Emmy since she is already hand tamed and thoroughly enjoys attention. Paris is still in his "settling into a new home" phase.

Paris
Paris has come to the point where he doesn't startle anymore when I walk by his cage. He allows me to get close to the cage and talk without showing fear. I'm pretty excited about this since he's only been here a week so far.

Emmy
Emmy doesn't reliably step up which is part of what prompted me to play with the idea of clicker training. Then I decided clicker training would be the best way for us to form a bond and keep her entertained at certain points during the day.
I began training this morning. I did five 5-8 minute sessions about 15-20 minutes apart. I have successfully conditioned the clicker.
I just completed our first target stick session. I must say Emmy surprised me. She is extremely intelligent and caught on very quickly. I introduced the target stick and she nipped it immediately. By the end of the 10 minute session she was following the target stick up and down her longest perch! She was very excited and I wanted to keep going, but I also did not want to push her too far. So we ended on a good note with a jackpot after she stepped about a half inch from her perch to her egg food bowl to nip the target stick.

I know nothing about clicker-training but I am very interested in reading about your progress. Sounds like a great start!

While on different degrees, it seems that you are at quite a promising start with both Emmy and Paris.
I'm glad your girl is already responding so well to the clicker training!

That's a great beginning. Go Emmy!

I'll be looking forward to your journal updates, Tiffanie.

It sounds like you're already making wonderful progress, Tiffanie!

Emmy really does sound like a very clever girl, and I'm glad Paris is getting used to you!

Keep up the great work, I can't wait to hear more!

Emmy
It was a really busy weekend compared to usual. I didn't get any training in on Saturday or Sunday, but Emmy picked up right where we left off last week.

I had started her training inside her cage because I wasn't sure how well she'd do, but since she did so well I decided to move it outside on top of her cage. This put us back a couple steps. I attached her rope perch to the top of the cage for her during training. The first couple days she wouldn't walk along the perch like she had done inside her cage.
This morning she readily walked up and down the perch following the target stick. Just to see what she would do next I put the target stick away from the perch so she would have to jump off onto the cage top to nip it. It took her a couple seconds, but she hopped off and went for the stick. Then she followed it around the top of the cage. I stopped there. We'll work on jumping back onto the rope perch next.

Paris
I will likely start getting Paris used to my hands this week since he's no longer afraid of my face or afraid of my body walking by his cage. He doesn't mind the children watching him anymore, either.

Another update! This time I have recent pictures of them.
Aaaannnndddd
Quarantine is finished this weekend!

Emmy
Emmy seems to get really excited about her training time. I haven't been able to get her to go from perch to perch yet, but she will step up onto my finger. I'm having trouble teaching her to learn the step up command in addition to the action. It will take some time for me to master this part because I can't say the command fast enough which results in a slower click. Patience.

Paris
Paris is still extremely cautious of my hand in his cage. It takes him a while to accept a piece of spray millet from my fingers. I decided to hold off on the clicker training until he is a little more comfortable with my hands.
I have been offering him a little extra seed out of my big open scary palm in the late afternoons and yesterday he finally stepped onto my palm to eat. I offered his regular morning seed the same way this morning and it took him much less time to step onto my palm and start eating.

Paris is camera shy. He refused to look at me until I put the phone down.

**I also want to add that it took almost the entire length of quarantine, but Paris is eating fresh veggies. He really enjoys bok choy.

Emmy and Paris both look great!
It sounds like you are making good progress as well.
I'm looking forward to more updates as your journey with them progresses.

Once Emmy is stepping up reliably from the motion (if I remember, the "standard" is 80 or 90% consistent....), you can add it the command just as you begin the motion* and then click when you usually do. If the action doesn't result in the step up, don't repeat the command. One command, only one action 80-90% of the time but sometimes extra, one click, one treat! Terrific progress!

*And if that doesn't leave you enough time, you can add in the voice command just before you start the motion. The association will get created either way.
