First I feel like I should give a little background as my situation is a little crazy... ha! I am currently in New York with my children because my mother is ill. So my hubby works still in SC and he comes to visit when he can. While life is crazy with a 6 year old and 1.5 year old twin girls, I missed having a feathery companion! I should also mention I have an English Bulldog (at home with her daddy) and a rescue mix breed lover that is with me and the kiddos. So it's a full house! but! I had adopted 2 birdies about 5 years back that were old when I got them and sadly my last one passed away while I was up here. I was very attached to them both, and while I never was able to bond with them... I enjoyed their company and songs and chatter.
So lately I discussed getting a bird with my dad for a few days and said I'd get a cage and everything and when the time is right I'll get to the pet shop and pick out one. Well, my Dad decided he wanted to surprise me and came home a few days later with Baby Bird. This holds such a special place in my heart since my dad is almost 70 years old, and walking for him is tough... so the fact he went in and picked out this special bird means the world to me.
Now that I got that out of the way I am going to just briefly recap my first 3 days with Baby.
This day Baby spent it in the back corner of the cage on the bottom. I placed some spray millet down for him and just let him be. I did keep talking to him and made all sorts of fun noises to try to get a reaction... but nothing was working. Totally figured that was going to happen though.
Made a little progress as he moved a little at the bottom of the cage. I spent most of the day talking to him and playing music to see if he enjoyed that. I got a few fluffs of feathers and a jump up to the middle perch! Progression!!!
Now I am caught up! Baby is now on the top perch facing me falling asleep. Poor guy I've probably kept him up a lot with my constant talking to him! haha I've noticed he will chirp a little and sometimes chirp in his sleep. It's so cute, but still he just has moments of being still most the time and then climbing up his cage, getting some seed etc. So I hope tomorrow he will be feeling a bit better in his cage.
What an eventful day we had (technically yesterday) I'll try not to update unless something really interesting or progress was made, but today Baby Bird had a little adventure if you will.
Before my dad brought home Baby Bird I purchased what I thought was a nice cage (as it was Kaytee brand) I believe it's called a Treat Play-n-Learn Cage. I should have known while putting it together it wasn't the most sturdiest of metal but I figured that's just how cages are made now. Once Baby was flying and getting used to his cage I'd notice his perch would fall down (all 3 of them) at times and I'd place them back up which I hated to do since I didn't want to disturb him. This happened a couple times and then he was fine up on the top perch and all was good. Well! My twins have a virus, and one is worse than the other so I took her to the doctor today. I received a message from my brother saying that Baby got out somehow. My guess is that he moved up the door which was flimsy. I told my brother to grab a wash cloth and pick up Baby and get him back in the cage.
Needless to say after my daughter's appointment we went shopping....
When I came home Baby was like this:
and now he's styling:
I am now aware that the cob bedding isn't recommended from reading everyone's posts... so I am just using it up and not buying anymore.
Even after changing cages and the adventure he had earlier he is in great spirits and was clearly loving his new home already... I even got a few chirps! I also told the cashier at PetSmart about the cage and she said I can return it, so that's the plan for later today!
