I have had Bubs for 3 weeks. He goes out 2-3 times a day, he plays with his toys, chirps and seems settled and happy. Think he is fantastic. I slowly put hand in but flies straight out. He is gd and flies in on own. How do I finger train him as he lively?! Thank you.
Before starting with finger training, the foundations of trust must be established, and this is done by spending time with your budgie and getting him used to your presence and voice. You will know when to proceed by looking at Bubs body language and behaviour and this can be seen when he shows real curiosity towards you and actually moves closer to you when you interact with him (whether in or out of the cage)
Since your Bubs is already used to having out of cage time, you can do short training sessions with him either inside the cage, or on his play area when out of the cage. When in the cage you can slowly place your hand in and offer Bubs a little tasty treat to eat in order to encourage him to perch on your hand/finger. You can use this same method when having out of cage time.
If your Bubs has a favourite toy he likes to play with, you can use this toy to reward him during the finger training sessions.
When training it's also important to keep the verbal communication going (praise words) by using your voice in a calm, positive, encouraging and reassuring way.
I have found that a great way to build trust and camaraderie with my budgie is through food. Everybody loves food right? Seeds are great, but I also like to hand feed Apollo slices of veggies like cucumber, carrots, or yams, for example. He makes a game of it, eating some, and tearing the rest of it to shreds and tossing the bits all about. Start with something you know he likes and offer it to him from your hand. It might take a while, so don't push it, just keep trying and eventually he will come to you. Once he establishes a connection between your fingers and yummy treats he will be more inclined to want to climb all over you.
In classical mythology Apollo is god of the sky, truth, music, and healing,
and is defender of flocks.
So excited. Bubs went out tonight on the table and for the first time went on my finger. He loves my phone and was curious. I put my finger at the bottom and he climbed onto it to get to the phone. Can't believe it. Watch this space for it to become a regular thing? So happy.
