I was talking at budgiedaddy (aka boyfriend) this morning about the dynamics shift im noticing. Maru is in that teenage phase... maybe and doesnt want ziggy all up in his face as Ziggy tends to do becasue 'i wub you let me sing and feed you, please be friend' thing ziggy does. So maru has been lunging at ziggy.

So knowing my flock and who is crazy for who, and what leads Max to being a jerk, we are going to try a social experiment. So first off historically Max gets agressive when he is very close to whoever he is in love with at that time. In this case Pippin. Close as in they can beak tap (between bars or in same cage then) move him to the solo cage and unless its out of cage time and bird of the day lands on his cage, he is fine. Max is also usually good with ziggy IF the separation from bird of the day is kept. Nether max or zigs do well solo. Max is the worst about it. Its a constant panic for him not being with the flock. Ziggy isnt as bad but he thrives when he has a friend. Max hadn't been a problem lately, that's why I thought it was ok for all to be together but I learned my lesson. I still can't trust Max to behave when bird of the day and possible competition are around.

So the idea is set max and zigs up in the solo cage well away from the bird of the day, Pippin.

Meanwhile set Pip up with Maru. Those two have been good together lately. And put star on the other side of the divider.

My only big concern is pips thing for Star. Things seem to have cooled down since she went on her short day vacation.

No matter what i will be keeping a close eye on the boys, Max and zigs in particular. I will pull Max and seperate if things look like he is going to be a problem.

My goal is for everybirdie to be happy and have bestest buds who like them back. Im kinda sad to see Maru lunging at Ziggy since they were so good together before but maybe as Maru comes out of this teenage phase he might be nice to zigs again. Admittedly ziggy can be a bit of an intense bestest bud at times.

I will admit I am wary of trusting Max, but both budgiedaddy and myself will be around and if we arw not Max and Ziggy will be separated.

Also, ziggy and maru are the only two I trust around star but she (the smallest in my flock) will chase Maru (the biggest) away and picks fights with ziggy.

-sigh- never a dull moment with these 5

I know!
My vet commented about how long his body feathers are as well. I thought it was a baby budgie thing but they are sticking around. Might just be a Maru thing?

Yup, I think it's a "Maru thing"! Just makes him that much cuter and unique.

I have been way to busy lately >.<

The Max and ziggy pair up in the single cage has gone well. They actually do super well together when bird of the day isnt around. Both sing to the other and are friendly. Star isnt causing drama with Maru and Pip in the double. Maru and Pip dont seem to care that much about each other but there isnt any lunging and being grumpy at the other ether.

The swelling is gone with Ziggys foot and all is well.

I plan on clicker training tonight or tomorrow but that is dependent on me having the energy when I get home. Tonight more likely then tomorrow since we have the latest (and hopefully last) snowpocolips heading in.

Happy spring!

I've enjoyed reading about your flock, and Maru has gotten to be such a big adult boy so quickly! Sorry that the flock dynamics have been so crazy lately. If it makes you feel any better, I only have 2 and they're difficult with each other as well

Maru did grow up so fast!
Still going to call him baby

With flock dynamics, eh. Its nothing new. Max has been the source of problems as long as I've had him and I should have known better. I know him well enough to at least find some level of calm with my current arrangment. I just seperate Max and put im in another cage when its Star, pip and Marus out of cage time. That keeps the drama down. Its still frustrating when he goes and 'tastes' one of the others. I want the boys to live together in harmony but Max doesnt like to share and now has hurt two birds because of it.

Aparently Ziggy has forgiven Max (he didnt even seem to fuss much about his foot ether) since the two are happy together well away from bird of the day (Pippin).

Update

Max had the ball in the bedtime carrier this week and will now tolorate its presence. He even kinda targeted it.

Ziggy is finally getting wave

Pippin is to stinken cute with his wave. I moved him onto loop but he was iffy on targeting infront of himself

Maru is improving on targeting

Im not sure what stars deal is. She reluctantly targeted for me and thats all we did tonight. She is in a bad molt and hasnt been her usual self. Im keeping an eye on her.

That's all for now. Next week shouldnt be as rough as this one so hopefully I will get more training in then I did this week.

Good birdie training Monday!
...posting on a Tuesday because I had to set up for our three avian guests that are staying in the spare room while their humans are moving. Our guest, even though they have spent time at our place before, are still kept in the quarantine room. Its in part because I dont trust a conure beak around budgie toes and in part to avoid the spread ofany potential koodies. At this point im not so concerned but its still good practice.

Anyway.

Ziggy was the only one who didnt step up for me. I only got bit by Star once when asking her to step up and I am taking small steps toward less wiggly budgies when they need to be restrained. Ziggy again was the odd one out. He refused to eat millet, instead did a play dead while in a hold. He completely relaxes and goes still until I react and he goes back to his usual self. Its a ziggy thing. The others will eat millet while being restrained so I use that to make it a positive experience. Max and Pip make that difficult but like I said, small steps.

They all got baths last night. Star is having a bad molt and needed a bath. I got a cute picture of Maru that I'll share below. He is still kinda molting. Lost a tail feather this weekend and has some pin pins in that crest of his. Not sure what happened but ziggy ended up with two spots on the top of his head that were missing feathers and not have a bunch of pin feathers comming in. I suspect it has something to do with Max, but they are good together when I am watching. They cant share a bedtime cage but i can deal with that. Pip and Max seem to be out of their molts at least. Hopefully once Star is out of her molt that will be it for a few months but with my luck it will be Marus turn to have a big molt >.< it never ends
