Default Belle and Petal's Training Journal :)

I've seen all these cool training journals and I decided I should start my own to keep track of the budgies progress in more detail, and also to share with you guys

I used to have a budgie named Sky who I taught quite a few tricks, but when I added my budgies Billy and Belle to the mix, I stopped trick training. Now of course I only have Belle. Before I got Petal I taught Belle how to target and how to spin. She's still a little rough around the edges with that trick but she's definitely getting there. I took a break from trick training her when I brought Petal home, and these past few days I started back up again. It's such a great way to get some one on one time with your budgies, especially when you have multiple!

Currently I take one budgie out of the cage and work with it on the play stand which is actually on top of the cage, however I'm getting my Dad to make me a training stand that I can use. I would prefer them to associate their stand with trick training, and their play stand with playing and doing their own thing if that makes any sense.

So anyway back to Petal, yesterday or the day before that, (I can't remember haha) I started clicker conditioning her. Today we started with some clicker conditioning again. At first the clicker sound startled her, but I worked with Belle before I worked with Petal today so I think that helped get her accustomed to the sound.

After a little bit more clicker conditioning I began target training with her. She was super duper wary of the target stick. I ended up using the millet to coax her into touching the target stick with her beak. She actually got kind of aggressive with the target stick but I wasn't concerned since she was just trying to figure out if it was a threat or not. I always keep my sessions super short and towards the end she was becoming a lot more comfortable with the stick, realising it's not going to hurt her, however it does bring her yummy millet haha. I always try to end my training with any animal on a high note and at the very and of our session she actually took a few steps towards the target stick all on her own, quite enthusiastically might I add and just gently touched it, without showing any signs of aggression.

I'm very proud of this little girl, and I can already tell she is going to really enjoy trick training. She's a very enthusiastic and active little budgie while Belle is a little more mellow. But both seem to really enjoy their training sessions, I mean, what budgie doesn't like getting millet haha. Random side night, a huge hare just hopped through my front yard haha.

Anyway I hope you enjoyed reading my little report on the budgies, and I will be making more updates to this thread on the budgies progress.

It's great that you are keeping a journal to keep track of the progress you make with Belle and Petal's training.
It sounds as though you are already making good progress.

Best wishes!

Thanks for the encouragement guys I have another update from today. Petal appears to have picked up on the target training super fast. I managed to get her targeting all over her play gym and onto different perches. She seems to really enjoy it.

I continued to practice the spin trick with Belle. She is getting better at it. I will likely teach her to wave next, but I really want to make sure she gets the spin trick down before I move onto teaching her something new.

I also want to say thanks to FaeryBee for encouraging me to do clicker training with them on my thread where I said I missed having a companion bird. Having this one on one training is so enjoyable for both me and the budgies and is such a great way to interact with them. I would definitely recommend it to people who have tamed birds and wish to interact with them more.

I have been finding that clicker training with two budgies actually seems to be going faster than training with one. I try to alternate between training each one first, and because they see the other bird eating millet, it makes them much more motivated. Belle has pretty much mastered the spin trick, she's even doing it on her own to try get a treat lol. I'm also doing step up exercises with both of them during these training sessions to help keep them finger tame. Petal has picked up on target training super fast. She's definitely a very hyper bird and since she loves to fly so much, I decided to go ahead and start flight recalls with her. She seems to really love it. Already she has learned to fly to my hand on command without the target stick. My hand is only about a foot and a half away from her but I'll increase the distance over time. We only just started the flight recalls today and she is soo enthusiastic about it. She flew several laps around my room while I typed this out haha.

CC,
I'm so glad to hear the clicker training is going well!
It certainly sounds as though you've already made great progress in a very short amount of time. Well done.

Thanks. I've decided it's time for Belle to learn a new trick since she's very comfortable doing spin now. I'm starting to teach her wave. In my experience this is one of the tougher tricks to teach a budgie but not impossible. I'm just starting with getting her to put one foot on my finger and gradually I'll get to asking her to just lift her foot, and then add my hand signal and voice cue

Petal is doing well with her flight recalls, I've been increasing my distance. I'm using the word "come" instead of her name because i say her name quite a lot lol.

Long time no see! I haven't been working with the budgies recently due to my health being poor, as well as Petal having a procedure at the vet which left her quite sore. But today I started back up with the clicker training. I just worked on stepping up and target training with Petal. Although Petal is tame, she is closely bonded with Belle and really has no interest in me at all, so I find that doing regular step up exercises is good just to ensure the trust is still there.

Belle is much better when it comes to stepping up for me, but again I still like to do step up exercises just to keep it all fresh in their memory. We also did some targeting and her spin trick. Belle acted as if we had never stopped training which was great. I've decided to stop training her the wave trick, at least for now. I'm finding that she's just becoming confused and stressed, and we seem to be going backwards more than forwards in that area. Instead I'm thinking I may try recalls with her and see how that goes.
