I've seen all these cool training journals and I decided I should start my own to keep track of the budgies progress in more detail, and also to share with you guys
I used to have a budgie named Sky who I taught quite a few tricks, but when I added my budgies Billy and Belle to the mix, I stopped trick training. Now of course I only have Belle. Before I got Petal I taught Belle how to target and how to spin. She's still a little rough around the edges with that trick but she's definitely getting there. I took a break from trick training her when I brought Petal home, and these past few days I started back up again. It's such a great way to get some one on one time with your budgies, especially when you have multiple!
Currently I take one budgie out of the cage and work with it on the play stand which is actually on top of the cage, however I'm getting my Dad to make me a training stand that I can use. I would prefer them to associate their stand with trick training, and their play stand with playing and doing their own thing if that makes any sense.
So anyway back to Petal, yesterday or the day before that, (I can't remember haha) I started clicker conditioning her. Today we started with some clicker conditioning again. At first the clicker sound startled her, but I worked with Belle before I worked with Petal today so I think that helped get her accustomed to the sound.
After a little bit more clicker conditioning I began target training with her. She was super duper wary of the target stick. I ended up using the millet to coax her into touching the target stick with her beak. She actually got kind of aggressive with the target stick but I wasn't concerned since she was just trying to figure out if it was a threat or not. I always keep my sessions super short and towards the end she was becoming a lot more comfortable with the stick, realising it's not going to hurt her, however it does bring her yummy millet haha. I always try to end my training with any animal on a high note and at the very and of our session she actually took a few steps towards the target stick all on her own, quite enthusiastically might I add and just gently touched it, without showing any signs of aggression.
I'm very proud of this little girl, and I can already tell she is going to really enjoy trick training. She's a very enthusiastic and active little budgie while Belle is a little more mellow. But both seem to really enjoy their training sessions, I mean, what budgie doesn't like getting millet haha. Random side night, a huge hare just hopped through my front yard haha.
Anyway I hope you enjoyed reading my little report on the budgies, and I will be making more updates to this thread on the budgies progress.
