Celeste has learned to fetch
(from a perch)!
I posted a video of her performance on the "Celeste's tricks" thread.
I still can't believe she learned it so quickly and easily, in just a few days (I have been away from home from 11th to 15th)! She keeps surprising me.
As you can see in the video, I used the cage door, put horizontally, as the surface where to put the toy ball.
The first step consisted in rewarding her every time she touched the ball, just like I do when she touches the target stick. She had no problem in learning that.
However, for the second step, I would have had to teach her to pick the ball up, and it wasn't working, because the ball is pretty heavy (and it is the smallest I was able to find) and she never lifted it, not even by accident; she only moved it.
So, I decided to put the ball on the edge of the cage door, with my hand (palm up) a little below it. When she happened to make the ball fall on my hand by touching it, I rewarded her. She quickly realized what she had to do.
Then, I started to slowly increase the distance, by putting the toy in the center of the cage door, and on the opposite end.
This worked, and even if she doesn't really lift the ball to put it in my hand, but simply drags it, and doesn't do that on the shelf but only on the perch, I couldn't be more proud of her.
About the next trick... I was thinking about basketball. I made a little basketball hoop, and I guess it would be easy to teach her to put the ball in it, as it is the same concept as the "fetch" trick.
I don't know if she can lift the ball enough, though...
