Default Falling off Perch

Hi everyone ,

I have come yet again to seek advice... Maybe someday I'll be able to give some back to this amazing place.

My young budgie falls off perches a lot. He has done this since day one. When I first got him his grip was really weak but he's still falling even though he's stronger. He grip is still much weaker than the others. He mostly falls when he's hanging upside down on a toy that moves like his rings or when he gets in an argument with the female budgie who tends to push him when putting him back in his place. He always twists himself so that he lands on his feet not matter which position he falls in (like a cat) and flaps his wings but they are clipped so he can't fly yet. However, sometimes he falls when he is just clinging to the side of the cage or if he leans too far back but only when he gets really excited about something. He immediately runs to the ladder and climbs up. He eats and drinks normally and is extremely active and chatty. He has become more active since we got him. The falling does not happen at a specific time and he never falls when sleeping. I do a couple night checks as my nightly routine.

The problem is that he falls so many times a day and he is in a flight cage so I'm concerned about his joints in the future of a broken bones in the now. Should I take him to the vet or does this happen when they have wings that were clipped so badly that they can't even use them for balance? Could he have hypocalcemia or just have weak muscles because of something unrelated? Could it be nutritional? He is never stiff or limp and his poop is normal. He is not fluffed up; no seizures and has no access to metals other than the ones that are on toys. He just seems a bit weaker than the female.

The way I see it, you know your budgies better than anyone, and if you think something if off, or wrong, it's better to be safe than sorry. Take him to an avian vet, just to be sure.

I think I will put in a call to my vet then. She will let me know if it's a good idea. She has warned me in the past about taking birds in because the stress of being handled if they are not tame can cause other problems and that they could go into shock from the cold in short distances even if there is a blanket covering the cage . I'm worried about taking him without thinking it over carefully especially since he's been doing this since day one and he is not tame and hates being touched so he would be very stressed.

Hello, this seems very strange indeed. Where did you buy him from and how old is he? Is iy at all possible for you to post a close up picture of his feet for us to see? Can he walk and run without falling over and can he stand flat footed on a surface that is flat?

He can walk without falling over no problem and can stand on flat surfaces. I got him at Petco. I will have to try to get a good shot of his feet later today.

I am worrying about if it's neurologic. Falling off perches is not always a good thing. Please contact an avian vet, maybe there's an explanation about it.

His balance seems fine other than the perch thing. Here is a video I took of him doing a bit of the types of things he does all day. Does his balance look alright? I know my other one is being horrible and have moved everything in the cage around since that little display...

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2yC-HBnZABw

These are the best shots I have that show his feet. I can try to get some when I get home from my classes. The last picture is an older one.

I can't call the vet until tomorrow because I can't talk on the phone in class and they aren't over until the exact same time the vet closes (she is an avian vet)...

As of age, I think he may be around 5-6 months or so as he has some bars, those big baby eyes, and has started to molt.

(The sand perch cover was only on 1/3 of the bottom perch they had plenty of other natural wood perches and a rope perch up top)

I had someone keep and eye on him all day and spoke with someone and we think he's trying to fly because he is jumping off the perch while screeching and flapping which I has previously chalked up to him being upset about falling. Turns out the flapping and screeching is happening before the fall. I may have freaked out over nothing because he fell pretty hard yesterday . Sometimes he manages to land on the perch but other times he misses or slips off.

I know it is not a seizure. We have experience with those and this is not one.
I'm still planning to call the vet so don't worry!

The other one is not behaving so good. Once I had a vicious female who would make trouble over nothing. She annoyed pretty hard one male, who would panic so much and fall again and again. Noone there could stand her so I separated her. Then the male didn't fall again. Maybe it's panic and fear over the other one.
Anyways, maybe the vet has a better explanation about it.

Yeah, she causes most of the falls but sometimes he just jumps... maybe he is trying to get away. I tried to have her by herself but she freaked out and dumped out all the food and kept flying into the bars every single day all day long for a week until I put her in with him. Most of the time they stay on opposite ends of the flight.
