Default Question about weight

I am just curious, when do budgies reach there adult weight?

Also, how much variation in weighing can be expected. My little guy was 32g when I got him back in September and right now his weight seems to vary between 34 to 36 depending on the day. His dad was 40g and mum was 36g both american but on the larger size. He was also fourth out of a clutch of five if that makes a diffrence.

He's not losing weight but I also don't want over feed him and get him fat either he's just shy of 6 mos

I applaud you for knowing his weight. From everything I have read and heard discussed, there are many factor's involved in a budgies adult weight. Genetic's, along with type of diet, and amount of exercise are the biggest consideration's. I have seen data showing 26-45 grams being the range for american/normal budgies. In my mind, that large variance alone speak's volumes about nothing being normal. Other info I have read suggest's 36-42 grams for normal's. I don't think at 6 month's your boy is done putting on adult size yet, but I am no expert. Either way he is in or very close to normal already, and if you do not feel any keel bone I wouldn't think he is underweight...

Just to kind of step on Randy's toes here, every budgie is different and should be treated as an individual. As such, every budgie's weight will usually be somewhat different. Similar to his brothers and sisters of course, but he is his own birdie. Just like I won't weight the same as you, and Nick and Randy will not weight the same. You need to, as Randy stated, feel his keel bone. If you feel a "sharp" keel, he is underweight, and may need to be seen by a vet. If you feel a thick layer of fat on his keel, then obviously he is over weight, and probably needs to be seen by a vet to give you some pointers on getting his weight under control. You should be able to easily locate the keel bone, but it shouldn't be covered by fat, or be sticking out too far. You'll know when you feel it if there is something off.

As for a general weight, I try to keep mine somewhere around 35-37g, depending on the bird.

As a general rule of thumb, if you are seriously concerned, an always safe bet is to just take him in to your trusted avian vet for a check-up. Just to be sure everything's in order.

I hope this helps and I think I speak for everyone when I ask politely,

PICTURES!!!...............................please.. .....

Agree with what's been said. Sammy was around 38g (within 1-3g when healthy) until this month, when he's shot to 40-41g! He's almost 10 months old, and the vet said that he shouldn't try to gain any more.

Hi guys! Thanks for the info. So I guess 10-12 months he should top out.
I felt his keel bone and I located it easily it felt the same as when the vet let me feel back in October.
He eats like a horse but is also so playful when out of his cage that he forgets all about food I have to make sure he goes back in his cage after an hour (even though he doesn't want to and will try and escape before I manage to close the door) or he gets very very cranky. It took me a while to figure out it was because he hadn't eaten in a while.
here is a not so great photo of him from this morning He just wouldn't stop moving!
