Talking Update On Ju

After I came home around January 18 from my vacation in Florida, I discovered that Ju's cere had turned chocolate brown and was crusty like a hen in breeding condition. However, Ju's male, and cere colour change isn't good. This happened a few months earlier, but went away in a week or so, and wasn't quite as brown. It was more of a tan, if I remember correctly. So anyways, I ruled out kidney disease this time around because his poop was completely normal and he wasn't drinking anymore than usual.

So, I started him on dandelion leaf and root tea immediately and his condition hasn't gotten any worse. No new symptoms have arose and he's acting like he normally does. At the start of the treatment, he seemed more hormonal, easily irritated like a hen. He was even fighting with his best friend, Charlie, just because he happened to be chattering near him! Now, he seems more like his old self and has been spending more time with Charlie again.

Ju's cere seems to be getting back to normal, too! Before, it was completely chocolate brown. Now, approximately a centimeter radius around his nostrils have become paler and I believe is turning blue. There's also a centimeter or so patch that is obviously blue in colour. My mom is even hopeful. He definitely isn't getting worse, and it definitely seems like he's improving. It's now only chocolate brown along the bottom third of his cere!

I was going to post photos of how his cere currently looks, but I'm having trouble uploading. I'm definitely going to try to upload again later so you guys can see for yourselves .

It is, isn't it? To think, only last week I was crying my eyes out because his cere hadn't really improved at all. Honestly, his cere has improved quite a bit. I got the idea of using dandelion root after reading about the trials they were doing in Windsor. In a lab setting, they found that dandelion root extract caused a variety of cancer cells (leukemia, pancreatic, etc.) to commit suicide. Now, this doesn't necessarily translate to the real world, but I read stories on the Internet with people who were dying of cancer taking dandelion root then going into remission!

Anyways, I can't say for sure whether it's the dandelion root that's helping Ju since his cere returned to normal all on its own last time, but I'd like to think that it's the tea. If his cere goes completely back to normal, I'm going to keep up the tea for six months more, then start offering water in another dish too.

Maybe last time the cancer was just getting started, and was producing only a small amount of estrogen that cause his cere to change colour. Then, maybe his body got used to the amount of estrogen and his cere turned blue again, only to turn dark brown when the cancer got worse or something? I honestly don't know why it changed back to blue. I guess it could be kidney related, but from what I read, his poop should have been a symptom.

Had you taken him to the vets before to find out what actually was going on ? If it was a kidney issue or cancerous? Because if the tea has helped that much Tyen I'm amazed! That's really good!

I didn't take him to the vet, although I did and still do want to. They would have done an exam, blood test, x-rays, and a whole lot of other stuff that Ju would not have done well with. Plus, it would have been quite expensive, although I'm not saying I wouldn't have been willing to pay to have it done. My parents don't like taking the budgies to the vet and think it's pointless to have tests done, especially since I know that it's likely cancer or kidney disease. Not to mention how stressful it would be for Ju to be handled so much. My budgies are practically wild.

Anyways, the tea definitely seems to be helping. It's used to treat kidney disease, liver problems, and cancer, among other problems, so it could easily be treating either of those problems, if not both. I'm definitely leaning more towards cancer since he hasn't been urinating anymore than usual nor has he been drinking a lot.

I'm so happy that he seems to be getting better . I always have dandelion root and leaf on hand just in case.

I am glad Ju's condition seems to be improving , but he really needs to go to an avian vet for a proper diagnosis. Can you offer to do some extra jobs around the house or another form of payment to your parents. I hope it is a permanent change in his health .

Good news guys! Today, his cere is almost completely blue! I would take him to the vet, but my parents start getting really offensive when I mention it, and I can't handle the anxiety and anger. They think it's stupid to find out what's wrong with him if he's getting better.

Here's the conversation I just had with my mom:

What would you say if I said I wanted to take Ju to the vet?

I'd say it's a waste of time.

Why?

Because he's small and they won't do anything for him.

If I asked Dad, he'd repeatedly tell me I don't have a job. I don't know what that has to do with anything, but okay. Then he'd say I only want to take him because of my OCD and that I just want to waste my money. Then he'd say that he and Mom shouldn't have let my adopt my new rescues.

I'm glad to hear that Ju seems to be continuing to improve.

May I ask where you get the dandelion leaf for the tea -- is this something you purchase or do you go out and pick dandelion leaves. I may need to make some myself sometime!

I actually buy my dandelion leaf and dandelion root from my local health food store. The dandelion root is the main ingredient in my tea. I only added dandelion leaf for the added nutrition and liver cleansing abilities. The root, from what I've read, seems to have more beneficial than the leaves, but that's not to say the leaves aren't amazing . If you have a herbicide- and pollution-free area to harvest whole dandelions from, they'd probably be even more beneficial than the store bought stuff. You'd just have to dry them first. It's really annoying trying to harvest the roots, so I just buy them.
