Default Quarantine questions to keep Kowhai safe.

Hi all!

I volunteer at the Wildlife hospital near me and since it is spring here in NZ lots of baby birds are brought in, and I now have with me two adorable baby pigeons. My avian vet asked me to take them and gave me info and instructions but I wanted to check with those here to make sure I'm doing this correctly.

The pigeon chicks will be with me for around 25 days, and during that time I'm keeping them in my office next to my bedroom where Kowhai sleeps and next to the living room where he lives during the day. The door will be shut, but I was hoping to leave it open sometimes to allow for airflow - would this be safe?

I need to feed the pigeons every hour and will need to handle them, so I will wash my hands after each feed before handling Kowhai. I am thinking I should wear a jacket as well.

I feel bad for Kowhai - he usually gets to rule the office while I'm in it. I think he'll be miffed at losing some attention!

So if anyone has any other suggestions I'd appreciate it. Thank you!

UPDATE: I moved them to the bathroom where there is a separate heater, and that way Kowhai can have the office back. :>

Some avian diseases are specific to the family in which they belong. So at least that omits some of the risk, Kowhai being a Psittacine and the Pigeons being Passerines.

I think you’ll be okay with Kowhai, but I definitely understand. We can never be too careful when it comes to quarantine. Wearing a jacket might or might not help. Technically, IF there were pathogens on the jacket, they could get transferred to your clothing when taking it off.

Actually... “true” quarantine would mean a building with separate airflow, hazmat suit, antimicrobial footbath, shower, etc . So when we do quarantine, we are really just doing it halfway . It definitely does help reduce risk though, so of course it’s always recommended.

Again, I think you and your little guy will be just fine with the pigeons, with the precautions you’re taking.
