I'm sorry if i go on a bit in this, but i am worried.
So, i have two budgies who are 3 and 2 years old. About 6 months ago, i rescued a lovebird which was found in a local park and wasn't claimed by his owner. I kept him in a different cage to the budgies, but they were always next to eachother and would fly together out of the cages. He was given a clean bill of health by a vet.
Tragically, this evening, Jeff, my lovebird had a heart attack and didn't survive. 😢
My budgies are now flying around looking for him. Is there anything i can do to stop them getting too distressed?
Any advice is hugely appreciated x
I am so sorry to hear of your loss of Jeff.
The budgies are naturally curious about where Jeff went, but they will be fine. It’s normal for birds to behave this way at the loss of a friend. Some birds even get depressed for a bit and mourn. Good news is that birds are very resilient, and they move on quickly. Usually much more quickly than a mammal pet would. They’ll be okay soon. I promise! Take care yourself.
I'm so sorry for the loss of your lovie Jeff! You've been given great advice by Julie above.
My best wishes to you and the flock
Thank you for your replies and well wishes. My home is very quiet at the moment, i hope my budgies will be ok and soon start singing again x
My deepest sympathy for the loss of your little lovebird.
Spending extra time with your budgies will help them deal with the loss of their friend.
