Default “End of Life” comfort

Hi all,

It’s been a while!! My little pal Bert is unfortunately suffering from end stage liver failure. He’s 15 now, and my vet said it’s just his time. No more we can do for him. He spends most of the day sleeping and sometimes seems to struggle to stay on his perch. I want to give him something in the cage that will allow him to rest his legs and lay down if he needs to. I have a little hut that I never used but I’m guess he should just have something on the bottom of his cage. Any suggestions? It’s so sad to watch. He’s been such a good birdie and has lived a long life without his mate, who passed in 2015. I’m heartbroken.

Thanks,
Andrea

I'm very sorry to hear Bert is in such poor health.
His quality of life has deteriorated tremendously and I'm sure he must be suffering.
The fact you've had him for 15 wonderful years is a testament to the love and care you've given him.

Having a little towel, platform perch or the hut you mentioned on the bottom of his cage at this point is fine. Be sure his food and water are easily accessible for him.

As difficult as it is, the best decision you could make would be to allow the vet to help him move on in his journey to the Rainbow Bridge.

I certainly know how hard it is -- I've had to let many of my beloved pets go over the years.
However, I truly believe it is the greatest act of selfless love one can give.
When a pet has reached the point where it is in constant pain and the quality of life is never going to improve, it is cruel to allow it to continue to suffer.

If you'd like, feel free to send me a Private Message and we can communicate more without our conversations being part of the public forum.

My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.

What a life your Bert has lived! If he enjoys being held and work from home, you could also make a little nest of sorts to be near your computer or hold him while you go about your day.

To update anyone following the thread:

Darling little Bert moved on to the Rainbow Bridge not long after Andrea posted.
He was very loved during his wonderful time with her and will be sorely missed.

Fly high and soar freely, sweet Bert; rest peacefully now, wee man.
