I came up stairs to see my budgie wriggling around and squealing on her perch!! It was as if she was trying to get a bad poop out, but I’m not sure if that is the cause. There’s now just a big lump on her behind. It appears she was trying to push something out, is she laying eggs???!!! Is she egg bind? Constipated? please help

You need to be watching her like a hawk as she is most likely trying to lay an egg. First time egg laying can be difficult and if she doesn't manage it within the day, it's a medical emergency and you need to take her to the vet or else she'll die. It was very traumatizing for my girl when she had her first egg, she didn't know what was happening and it caused bleeding and pain.

Ok! I just went to the pet store to buy her a nesting hut she can lay her egg in. Thank you.

This is why male and female budgies shouldn't be housed together and why breeding budgies shouldn't be done without undergoing the proper research. Egg-binding is a deadly and painful way for your girl to die. Please watch her very closely and keep us updated.
Will do. I never intended to breed them, and this is honestly unexpected because there was no nesting site for them to mate in. Thank you.

Okay, I’ll see what I can do, thank you

Quick question, how long did it take for your budgie to lay her egg? It’s taking my budgie about an hour or so, a little more.

Has your budgie laid her egg yet? My breeding girls typically lay there eggs around 5-7 days after mating.
Yes!! She just laid her first egg. I’m very proud of her.

What should I do with it? should I cover it up in the pink towel so it stays warm? I’m planning on keeping just one of the babies

Good girl!!!! phew!!
:giggle:

Have you installed the nest box in her cage yet?
Yes. I got a recovery cage for her

the cage I got is small enough so in case I need to take her to the vet I can

Do you have an avian vet, if not where are you located?
I live 45 miles from my local avian vet.

Is she bonded with your male budgie?
I’d say so, he preens her and they spend most of their time together. Do you think the egg could be fertilized? Or is it more likely it’s infertile?

Producing eggs, whether fertile or not, is very stressful on the hen and depletes calcium from her body which can contribute to egg binding, make sure she has a calcium source available. What does her diet consist of?
Dr Harvey’s best parakeet food, a healthy mix of vegetables and fruits and grains, no preservatives or artificial colors. When should I feed her and how much?

Yes. Put calcium powder in her food, supply her with a mineral block and cuttlebone. What is her current diet? Is she bonded to your male budgie?
Will do, I’ll be sure to purchase some calcium powder and a cuttle bone either off of Amazon or at the pet shop.

When should I feed her after giving birth? Would giving her a treat (millet) be a bad idea? There appears to be no more eggs layed. Will more eggs come? Sorry for all the questions

Getting nervous, no more eggs have came. She’s starting to tweet and sing a little, but she’s desperately looking for her waterbowl and I’m trying to show her where it is without her escaping.

No more eggs is a good thing, since she just passed one today if more are coming you should not see them today. The one that she did lay may not be fertile, in a few days you can candle the egg to see if it is fertile, if you are not familiar with the process check this out Budgie Egg Candling – Chick Development Stages Inside Eggs
Okay. Do you think more will come? I’ve read that budgies typically lay 4-8 eggs on their first time. Her bum area still looks a bit swollen, not nearly as bad as before though.

She’s ate some food and is much more relaxed. she seems pretty chill now, she’s tweeting, preening, etc,. I don’t think she’s drank water yet though. I have her recovering in her cozy, much smaller cage. Hopefully that’s helping. I have her covered to shield her from the light, but is light better or worse?

You need to be doing everything possible to discourage breeding.

Have you disposed of the egg?
That is your best course of action.
You do NOT want her to incubate the egg or to continue laying

Rearrange everything in the cage every couple of days, including perches, toys, food dishes, etc.
Limit her daylight to no more than 8 hours per day.
Limit the protein in her diet.

Do not allow the birds to mate.
You have neither the knowledge nor experience to allow breeding.
Domestic budgies are much healthier and happier when they are never bred.

I havent disposed the egg. Will she lay more? Can I stop her from laying more? I’ve had my two budgies housed together for years and they’ve never mated, there were no nesting sites and I’ve never caught them mating either, this is definitely a surprise. But that’s no excuse, and I really should’ve been more careful. Could the eggs be infertile?

You should remove the snuggle hut as it isn't good for them. It increases their hormonal tendencies and encourages them to breed.
oh okay. I just bought the snuggle hut because I thought that could serve as a nesting box for her to lay her eggs in or comfort, but in general I know snuggle huts should be avoided.

When you say “continue laying” do you mean there is a way I can stop her from laying any more eggs?

Your female could have either mated with your male, and thus, will continue to lay eggs until a whole clutch is laid. Or, she could just be egg-laying, which is also bad, and can deplete the calcium in her body. Either way, it seems that since you have no experience with breeding/females laying, the best course of action for you to take is to throw out the egg, since she hasn't sat on it for 3 days. And continue to throw out the eggs that she will lay, as she will most likely lay another egg every other day.

Absolutely excellent advice from Silver Dawn and the staff! Eggs are not viable until they are incubated consistently for three days. The best course of action is to toss the egg and try and rearrange the cage to discourage more laying.

Hope things go well! 🤞

Okay, thank you so much! Sorry to bother you with so many questions but she hasn’t layed anymore eggs, is it possible she could only lay one egg? do you think she’ll lay another today? Thanks
